Eighteen GHS seniors were inducted into Torch light on November 21 in the Grimsley Media Center. This was the first induction cere mony for the 1978 school year. Torchlight inductees in clude Vicki Blalock, Michelle Bowie, Michael Coyle, Stephen Evans, Gary Kareshi, Brian Littlefield, El len McAdams, Joseph Mor ris, and Rita Odom. Other new members are Sandra Pleasants, Todd Poston, An na Poulos, Gerri Ratliff, William Stowman, Denia West, Pamela Wiggins, Vir ginia Woods, and Jeffrey Zaleon. Torchlight is the name of Grimsley’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Chris Evergreen Competition Begins; Four GHS Service Clubs Participate Eight local high school service clubs have entered the Greensboro Youth Coun cil’s Chris Evergreen Com petition and are competing for a first prize of $200 and the right to advance tonatiO'^ nal competition for ecologi cal activities. The purpose of the first- year project, according to GYC Youth coordinator Lea Spencer, is to involve high school youth actively in eco logical projects that provide a community service and are environmentally beneficial. Clubs compete for cash prizes arid awards by spon soring, organizing, and ruiming an approved Chris Evergreen project. Some of the projects run by Grimsley service clubs include decora ting bird trees in neighbor hoods, cleaning the groimds at the Thompson children’s School, writing a children’s story and telling it in nursery schools, and planting pine trees at Grimsley. All approved projects mut be operated between November 27 and December 25. Club project chairmen will submit their Chris Ever green project notebooks for judging by January 12, and on January 30 winners wiU be announced at an awards program. The winning projects wiU be submitted to national con tests open for ecology pro jects done by high school age groups. Grimsley clubs involved in the competition are the Civinettes, the OHJ’s, the Chariotters, and the Y-Teens. Other clubs com peting are the Page OHJ’s, Jaycettes, and Keywanettes, and the Smith Ecology Club. The third place project Apprentice Clown Darnell Earns Circus Post Tournament Involves Eight Local Teams The third annual Little Four BasketbaU Toiunament wiU be held at the Greens boro Coliseum from Decem ber 27 through 29. 'Tickets for the Little Fom Tournament went on sale November 26 and are avail able from the Coliseum box office for students at $6.00 and $7.50 for adults. Grims ley students may purchase tickets from service club members for only $5.00, and Grimsley parents may buy a book of tickets for $6.00. 'Hie price of the tickets includes three nights of basketball and a dance on Decem ber 29. Joining last year’s partici pants in the Little Four are High Point Andrews, High Point Central, Thomasville, and Ragsdale. Grimsley wiU play the last game of the night on Decem ber 26 against a respectful High Point Central team. The air is thin riding high above the groimd on some one’s shoulders who is on a seven foot unicycle. Just as Jeff Darnell does. Jeff graduated from Grimsley in 1978. Since his earliest childhood, his goal has been to become a profes sional clown. As Jeff visited with Mrs. Hoffler’s first period American Literature class on November 30, he explained how he trained as a clown and was selected from a field of 52 aspirants to receive a contract with Ring- ling Brothers, Bamum and Bailey Circus. It was a story of a dream realized. During his eight weeks of training, Jeff has been through rigorous regimen at Clown College in Venice, Florida. He was one of 52 selected from4,000applicants to receive training at the school. These students learned everything from how to fall down without injming them selves to riding an elephant. At the end of the comse, the students held a special three hour audition for the presi dent and vice president of Ringling Brothers’, Bamum and Bailey Circus. Only eighteen of the 52 were selected, to perform with the circus. Thirteen, including Jeff, were selected for the “Blue” show which travels the western half of the U.S. and smaUer cities. Five were chosen for the “Red” show which begins a new number with the theme In order to be eligible for membership in the Society, a student must have at least a 3.4 ciunulative grade point average. A list of these students is then sent to the faculty members who vote for the students of then- choice. The final decision is made by a selection commit tee composed of Grimsley Principal Mr. Glenn, gui dance counselors, and de partment chairpersons. 'They judge the students with the highest number of votes from the faculty on charac ter, leadership, scholarship, and service — the fom- quedi- ties of a Torchlight member. Torchlight induction are held twice a year, in the faU and in the spring. Presently, Torchlight members are busy conclud ing their fundraising project, a pecan sale, which began in November and which has thus far been highly success ful. The profits from this ventvu-e go toward scholar ships which are awarded annually on the basis of need, desire, and the four Torchlight qualities. Jeff said that he is not sme how long he plans to stay with the circus. He indicated that he would like to attend Carolina; however, he said he would stay with the circus as long as they wanted him. Jeff is the son of Mr. D.L. Darnell, teacher of Technical Drafting at Grimsley.
