A Word
A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
That day.

The air is thin riding high
above the groimd on some
one’s shoulders who is on
a seven foot unicycle. Just as
Jeff Darnell does.
Jeff graduated from
Grimsley in 1978. Since his
earliest childhood, his goal
has been to become a profes
sional clown. As Jeff visited
with Mrs. Hoffler’s first
period American Literature
class on November 30, he
explained how he trained as
a clown and was selected
from a field of 52 aspirants to
receive a contract with Ring-
ling Brothers, Bamum and
Bailey Circus. It was a story
of a dream realized.
During his eight weeks of
training, Jeff has been
through rigorous regimen at
Clown College in Venice,
Florida. He was one of 52
selected from4,000applicants
to receive training at the
school.
These students learned
everything from how to fall
down without injming them
selves to riding an elephant.
At the end of the comse, the
students held a special three
hour audition for the presi
dent and vice president of
Ringling Brothers’, Bamum
and Bailey Circus.
Only eighteen of the 52
were selected, to perform
with the circus. Thirteen,
including Jeff, were selected
for the “Blue” show which
travels the western half of
the U.S. and smaUer cities.
Five were chosen for the
“Red” show which begins a
new number with the theme
In order to be eligible for
membership in the Society, a
student must have at least a
3.4 ciunulative grade point
average. A list of these
students is then sent to the
faculty members who vote
for the students of then-
choice. The final decision is
made by a selection commit
tee composed of Grimsley
Principal Mr. Glenn, gui
dance counselors, and de
partment chairpersons. 'They
judge the students with the
highest number of votes
from the faculty on charac
ter, leadership, scholarship,
and service — the fom- quedi-
ties of a Torchlight member.
Torchlight induction are
held twice a year, in the faU
and in the spring.
Presently, Torchlight
members are busy conclud
ing their fundraising project,
a pecan sale, which began in
November and which has
thus far been highly success
ful. The profits from this
ventvu-e go toward scholar
ships which are awarded
annually on the basis of
need, desire, and the four
Torchlight qualities.
Jeff Darnell
of “The 1980 Olympics.” It
travelsthe East coast and to
larger cities. Jeff will not be
performing in Greensboro
imtil next year.
Jeff said that he is not sme
how long he plans to stay
with the circus. He indicated
that he would like to attend
Carolina; however, he said
he would stay with the circus
as long as they wanted him.
Jeff is the son of Mr. D.L.
Darnell, teacher of Technical
Drafting at Grimsley.
