Grimsley’s girls’ track
team stands unbeaten at this
point in their season with a
2-0 record. In a noncon
ference triple team meet, the
Whirlies scored 86 points to
top Western Guilford by 21
and rout Page by 73 points.
Dudley also fell prey to
Grimsley on March 22 by the
score of 75-57.
The Whirlie victory over
Western and Page featured
two new school records by
Sherri Phillips in the long
jump at 16’9” and in a triple
jump of 32’9*/2”. Veronica
Lockard also set a new mark
in the shot-put with a throw
of 32 feet. Other Whirlie
wmners included Kathy
Krege in the two mile event,
the 800 meter relay of Susan
Flannagan, Onelia Davis,
Dottle Fulp, and Betsy Wal
ker, the 400 meter relay
squad including Fulp, Davis,
Walker, and Flannagan.
Mary Hankins also set a new
Whirlie record with a second
in the 200 meter hurdles at
38.2.
Sherri Phillips continued
to break her own records
against Dudley in the long
jump at 17’4% and triple
jump at 33’8‘/2” for new
Whirlie marks. Also claim
ing firsts for Grimsley were
Veronica Lockard in the dis
cus, Mary Hankins in the 110
and 180 hurdles, Sherri Phil
lips in the 100 meter nm,
Amy Derrick in the mile.
Page Morton in the 800
meter, Kathy Krege in the
two-mile, and the 1600 meter
relay team by a close four-
tenths of a second.
Soccer^Team Kicks Off Setison
by Wayne Earley
The Grimsley girls’ soccer
team will begin this year on a
rather uncertain note. Look
ing strong in all areas except
one, they still have not found
a goal keeper.
The Whirlies were not
hurt too badly by graduation,
but they did lose a couple of
key players at the close of
last season. In addition to
Colen Wolf, a full-back who
helped a lot on defense, the
team lost Jackie Barrier.
Barrier was the goal keeper,
and her position has been
hardest to fill this season.
