HIGH LIFE
Netters Play Consistently
Soccer Advances
by Alison Pentz
Dicky Vaughn and Gary
Breece appear to be leading
the Whirlie tennis team to
another championship sea
son. No conference team has
stolen more than two games
from the Whirlies, and
Grimsley’s conference rec
ord stands at 4-0.
Coach Hickey is “tickled
to death” at the progress his
team has made. The Whirlie
netters blanked Ragsdale 9-0
in the season opener, fol
lowed by a heartbreaking 5-4
loss to non-conference foe,
High Point Central. The loss
was a close one, as the event
was decided by a third set
tie-breaker in one match.
Grimsley then rallied for
three staight victories over
Kannapolis (8-1), Dudley (8-
1), and West Forsyth (7-2).
Soon to come on the Whirlie
schedule is a dangerous
Parkland team, followed by
Burlington Williams.
Individual standouts in
clude undefeated top player
Dickie Vaughan at 5-0, fol
lowed by the Kiser ninth
grade student, Gary Breece
at 4-0 in the number two
seed. Third-ranked Greg
Parker is also outstanding at
a consistent 4-1.
Doubles pairs setting the
pace include Tom Bugbee
and Scott Hogewood at 4-1,
and Dickie Vaughan with Pat
Carmody at 3-1.
Coach Hickey’s pleasure
with his team’s success
stems from the fact that
many players are getting an
opportunity to compete. The
Grimsley loss to Central was
not totally disappointing be
cause eleven Whirlies
played, instead of the custo
mary six or eight. The team
is playing consistently and
hopes to remain undefeated
for the conference crown.

The Whirlies should have
an above-average forward
line and should be strong on
defense. Grimsley has made
great day-to-day improve
ment in this season’s prac
tice.
Another great asset will be
the 18 retinming letter-eam-
ers from last season’s team.
Grimsley will not be in a
conference such as Division-
7 or Division-8, nor will they
be in the City of Greensbo
ro’s Recreation League. The
soccer team will play other
schools, both public and
private.
Blackwell’s Pitching Leads Jayvees
by Tommy Grant
Behind the pitching of
Tony Blackwell, the Grims
ley Jayvee baseball team has
estabhshed a record of 3-0.
Two Whirlie victories came
over Ragsdale by scores of
11-1 and 6-0. And in an
exciting extra inning thriller,
Grimsley nipped Western
Guilford 3-2.
One jayvee player sees
junior varsity sports as a
good experience for the ath
lete toward varsity sports
next year. A few juniors who
would not see much playing
time on the varsity were
moved to the jayvees for the
building of experience.
Coach David Dowd feels
this year’s sophomores are
“decent” and if the players
keep a good attitude and
play summer ball they wiU
be ready for the varsity next
year.
Pitcher Tony Blackwell
heads the list of players
expected to add needed
strength to next year’s var
sity squad. Third baseman
Cyrus Shoffner, lead batter
Mike Cates, Steve Johnson
playing left field, catcher
Teska Dillard and shortstop
Stace Flyim should contri
bute greatly to the Whirlie
cause with next year’s var
sity.
In the long nm, all of these
games are practice towards
next year, and the 3-0 record
is a hopeful sign for the
varsity team.
On April 7, Tony Blackwell
was moved up to the varsity
squad where he pitched a
one-hitter against Smith.
