HIGHUFE Homecoming Dance Friday 10-1 Volume LVIV, Number 2 Grimsley Senior High School Thursday, October 25, 1979 Student Council Essa, Spruill Elected Oass I^residents By Shandon Bates Junior and sophomore stu dent council representatives were chosen by homeroom voting on September 21. Chosen as Junior class representatives were Carol Essa, Glen Gorham, Kelly Ferrell, Cynthia Rankin, and Sandy Sillmon. The sopho mores elected were Lynn Leonard, Devon Spaulding, Julie Hollander, Ronald Spruill, and Becky Sillmon. These elected representa tives met October 5 to estab lish council positions. The Council’s junior members chose Carol Essa as Class Chairman; Glen Gorham, YRC Representative; Sandy Sillmon, Pep Board Repre sentative; Cynthia Rankin, Student Affairs Representa tive; and Kelly Ferrell, Council Secretary. The so phomores chose Ronald Spruill as Class Chairman; Becky Sillmon, Pep Board Representative; Devon Spaulding, YRC Representa tive; Julie Hollander, Stu dent Affairs Representative; and Lynn Leonard Treasur er. The Class Chairman is in cheu-ge of taking the Coun cil’s business to the home room presidents, and is also in charge of a class project to raise money for the pictures in the aimual and to pay for the class gift. Student Af fairs representatives are in charge of public relations work such as the presenta tion of Thanksgiving dinner to Grimsley’s janitorial staff and the annual visitation to the pediatrics ward at one of the two local hospitals and distributing candy there dur ing Christmas holidays. Pep Board representatives are in charge of building school spirit by sponsoring Spirit Days and planning pep ral- lys. The Youth Recreation Committee representatives (YRC) are in charge of dances and other entertain ment such as the Homecom ing festivities. [Long photo] Frederick, Robbins Start Year By Jennifer Enright Pauline Frederick and Charles Robbins were this year’s first Get Set program speakers on Tuesday, Octo ber 2 at the Carolina Thea ter. The lecture, which be gan at 10:00 a.m., was attended by approximately 1000 interested students from the four city high schools. Ms. Frederick, an award winning commentator, and Mr. Robbins, an energy consultant, began the day with a press conference at Weaver Center, conducted by student newspaper edi tors. After the press confe rence, the husband-wife team proceeded to the Caro lina Theater, where they lectured on the topic “The Human Race vs. the Arms Race.’’ Frederick, an international affairs analyst for National Public Radio, was the main lecturer. Robbins, an expert in the field of energy fol lowed, because according to Ms. Frederick, “. . . he always has the last word in our house.’’ Mr. Robbins spoke on the uses of nuclear energy and other energy sources op posed to fuel. At the end of the presenta tion, the speakers received questions from the audience. Get Set is a program sponsored by SSBAG. Utter Week Governor Jim Hunt has declared the week of October 15-20 Clean Up Litter Week. Litter destroys and costs the state tax payers in excess of one miUion dollars a year. Hunt encourages all stu dents to participate in the program. Looking toward Clean Up Week, a number of Young Life members participated in a Grimsley campus clean-up during the October 9 teacher workday. SSBAG Grimsley’s SSBAG mem bers attended an orientation meeting at the Administra tion Building on September 28 at 10:00 a.m. Mrs. Joanne Bluethen- News Briefs thal, a member of the Greensboro City School Board, presided over the meeting. Speakers who in troduced the SSBAG mem bers to the program were Mr. Jim Betts, Dr. Kenneth Newbold, Mr. Mel Swann, and Mr. Mike Renn. SSBAG members from Grimsley are Ken Anderson, Jon Al bright, Carl Winfield, Lydia Harris, Jenny Enright. Wayne Moore, Mike Sher rill, Carol Essa, and Ronald Spruill. Junior Mss September 22, the Greensboro Junior Miss Program was held in Odell Auditorium at Greensboro College. Theresa Wilcox, a senior at Northeast High School, won the competition, recei ving a five-hundred-dollar [See News Briefs, p.8] Juniors Take Test By Bryan Smith Juniors and Homecoming 1979 By Shandon Bates “A Long and Winding Road” is the theme for this year’s Homecoming festivi ties. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen, the dance, and football game with High Point Andrews will take place on Friday night, October 26. The following girls have been elected to the 1979-80 Homecoming Court: Robin Benton, Cameron Clegg, Jo Ann Engle, Susan Flanna- gan. Ay Frazier, Wendy Ford, Rosalyn Gibson, Genia Hunt, Jane Moffitt, Jean Moffitt, Regina Newell, Kim Paul, Peun Rice, Lisa Tagert, Kitten Worthy. The Court was presented to the student body at the October 12 pep rally. This year’s dance will be from 10:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. The extended time is to accommodate the football players who plan to attend the dsmce. In the past the dance has been held the Saturday night following the game. The band this year is Spirit, a group that played for the Governor’s School earlier this year. Service club presidents met with Mike Sherill to decide on their club project for Homecoming. A trophy will be presented at the [See Homecoming, p.8] seniors in Greensboro’s four city high schools who had not taken or passed North Carolina’s Competency Test received their opportunity on October 11 and 12. The purpose of the Com petency Test is to determine if the students have achieved certain basic skills in high school. In order for a student to receive a diploma, he must pass the Competency Test. The test was brought about by the North Carolina General Assembly as a re sponse to the national con cern over the value of a high school diploma. The test was designed by the Competency Test Commission to accur ately measure basic skills and be fair to all students.
