Page 2 HIGH LIFE New Calendar Detracts From Qaality Education By Martin Miller With a surprisingly low turnout of no more than thirty-five people, the Greensboro School Board adopted an amended Plan “D” Calendar for 1980-81 school year. Out of some twenty-five SSBAG members in the city of Greensboro, only two members thought this meeting merited their attendance, Ken Anderson and Carl Winfield, both from Grimsley. At this crucial School Board meeting the reason for the change in the calendar was never addressed. And, for the thirty-five people who were concerned enough to attend the meeting, no questions were asked by them, as it is the School Board’s policy not to entertain any person’s question without an advance notice before the meeting. The School Board listened to several speeches against Plan “D”, and that was all that was heard from the concerned citizens. Only through Mrs. Jo Anne Bluethenthal, a Board member, did the rest of the School Board hear the arguments of the students. But with little or no support from other School Board members, she could only postpone imtil next yeeu- any decision concerning the two make-up snow days on April 17 and 21.. The major points of discrepancy over the calendeu* are: the positioning of teacher workdays, Christmas vacation, and Spring holidays. As the 1980-81 school calendar now stands, the teacher workdays are liunped at the beginning of the school year. Thus, this gives little or no time for teachers to average grades, hold parent conferences, and re-evaluate their curriculinns. Also, the release from school on December 24 will prevent many students and teachers from traditional family “get-togethers.” Most likely, many students and teachers will leave school possibly days before December 24 to visit their relatives, while those in school will be preoccupied with the holidays already upon them. Also, the Spring Break scheduled in April assures the students of only one day of vacation, Easter Monday. April 17 and 21 are to be voted on later next year. If those days in April are used to make up snowdays, this would give students only three days of break from January 5 to June 5, over five months. Thus, with the other controversial changes proposed for next year, students, teachers and parents now have something else with which to contend. Monday, April 28, 1980 Opinion’ Exchange Student Impressed With GHS (Editor’s Note: The following letter was received by Assis tant Principal James Fuller after Exchange Day.) Dear Mr. Fuller, My day at Grimsley was one that I will cherish and remember forever. I really had a wonderful time. Every one seemed to be so friendly and they also seemed to have a lot of school spirit. You campus is one that can’t be improved! It is so beautiful and spacious, one that every one, I’m sure, is proud to have. I’m sure you are proud to be a part of such a fine school. It is one with great leadership and disci pline. World Solutions - A Satirical View Get Militants Out Of Embassy By Barbi Prillaman The morale of the world’s nations has been going downhil since the end of the Second World War. Granted, the peoples of the world have had serious problems to deal with in the past thirty-five years, but the process of dealing with these problems has become little more than a mess of red tape and heated arguements. Therefore, in order to eliminate any further confusion, the follow ing suggestions constitute a list of definitive solutions to some of the world’s problems. Inflation has been a predominant problem in the past few years. The power of the U.S. dollar has gone into a nosedive while inflation goes through the roof with seeming ly no remedy in sight. Many people have offered their plans for whipping inflation, but the definitive plan seems to be that of Dan Akroyd, formerly of NBC’s “Saturday Night”. Akroyd has suggested that the Bureau of Printing and Engraving print more money. With more currency in circulation, the morale of American citizens will get a boost, as anyone will be able to buy a $500 suit or a $50 cigar. The additional legal tender will eQso insure a minimal saleiry of $25,000 per annum for the typical blue-collar worker. One solution for several problems would be to dig a canal from Galveston, Texas to Sacramento, California. Unemployment will disappear, as manpower for the digging will be in great demand. No one will need to worry about the draft; there will be no one left to draft. The U.S. can end the Panama Canal commotion once and for all; we will have a canal of our own. (Perhaps, for extra revenue, the U.S. can lease this canal to the Soviet Union.) Californians will no longer have to worry about becoming an island due to earthquake tremors; in essence, California will become an island, but it wiU be because of the canal. This new Californian island can be used as a homeland for the Palistinians and/or the Cambodians. Thus, five pertinent problems will be solved with the construction of one canal. Finally, a solution to the Iranian problem. It seems that there is no way to get the Americans out of the embassy in Teheran, so an effective measure might be to get the militants out of the embassy. All that has to be done is to give authorization to the hostages to create an official United States possession, or possibly even a separate nation. This way, the Iranian militants can be extradited for not having passports. Though this plan only sounds feasible on paper, it is about time that the United States took some action, even this, toward getting the hos tages home. The staff members were all so friendly. They welcom ed us with hellos and smiles. We were asked to introduce ourselves, and we even had a discussion in a fifth period history class about the dif ferences in the schools. Your staff is very warm and I’m sure they will continue to be that way. I’m proud to say that I didn’t get bored at all, not even for a second. There was always something interest ing that I saw. Thanks again for such a fine opportunity to visit Grimsley. I really enjoyed myself and I’m proud to say that it was worth my time. Yom-s truly, La‘Vondia Gibson Ben L. Smith High School Thanks, Mrs. Moody Dear Editor: Recently I received a letter from the University I wished to attend saying I was on their waiting list. This means I am a borderline case, and I won’t hear anything from my University imtil June. I went to the Guidance Office to see what Waiting List meant and what else I could do to be admitted. I was fortunate enough to talk to Mrs. Moody. The moment one meets Mrs. Moody, one knows that she is in control and well-organized. She ex plained to me what ‘ ‘waiting list” was and what else I could do to be admitted. She, then, called the school to make sure the admissions office had received my com plete transcript. I would like to thank Mrs. Moody for her understanding and patience. As I am sure I am not the only student Mrs. Moody has done this for, I am writing anonymously in hopes that it will speak for others who have been fortu nate to receive her guidance and help. Thank you, Mrs. Moody.
