Attendance, Discipline, Consequences
Policy Changes: System-Wide
On May 26, from five to
six p.m., the faculty
representatives and student
leaders will once again honor
the seniors at the Alumni
House of UNC-G with the
traditional Senior Tea.
The Senior Tea, an
established tradition at
Grimsley, started approx
imately thirty-five years ago
when the Grimsley faculty
assembled with the senior
class to offer their con
gratulations and to wish
them luck. The Senior Tea is
still held in the Alumni
House at UNC-G and re
mains the only high school
in North Carolina to honor
its seniors this way.
According to Mrs. Lillian
Sutton, chairperson of this
year’s tea, “It is tber
faculty’s way of saying
‘Thank you’ and ‘con
gratulations’ to outgoing
senkws.”
The tea, a formal after
noon affair, is complete with
a receiving line and music
from the school orchestra.
beware, rising seniors and
juniors! A new and stricter
attendance and discipline
policy is headed your way for
school year 1982-1983.
A school committee is now
meeting regularly to make
recommendations regarding
attendance. This committee
consists of the following
randomly picked faculty
members: Mr. McKinney,
Mr. Smith, Mr. Knox, Mrs.
Crisp, Mrs. Simons, Mrs.
Williams, and Mrs. Chap
man, the chairperson. The
recommendations will be
turned over to GHS principal
Dr. Bonny Baur, who will
then try to fit them into a
whole new policy involving
not only attendance, but
“discipline and conse
quences’’ as well.
Assistant Principal Mr.
James Whites will be GHS
representative in the system-
wide committee, of which

Mr. Bennie Higgins, Smith
High School principal, is
chairman.
Baur emphasizes that one
purpose for these changes is
to make the rules consistent
throughout the system.
Therefore, a student from
Page caught with alcohol on
campus would get the same
punishment as would a stu
dent from Grimsley for the
same offense.
It is also true, Baur adds,
that some teachers feel the
present “attendance policy
is too lenient.’’ She states
that “Some teachers have a
philosophical problem with
unexcused absences’’; that
is, they believe no absence
should be unexcused _

a variety show.
Unfortunately, the Senior

In the April issue of High
Life, the flag pictured is
identified as being donated
