Get Involved Make Grimsley Greater By Tamera Majors During the school year 1983-84, “opportunity will knock at your door,” There will be clubs to join, tdances to attend, people to meet; homework to love, games to attend, “all in all” a chance to learn about GHS by becoming involved. The activities listed are not only directed to “new-comers” to Grimsley, but to returning students as well. The best way to become aware of the events that are available for par ticipation is to listen to announcements and go to the meetings that are publicizing for memberships. Ask questions of your peers, teachers, and administrators and become knowledgeable on the affairs of the clubs in which you have an interest. Become aware of the procedures of enrollment of specific organizations. If there is not a club that interests you then support the students who have found interests in the various organizations. Members of athletics, dramatics, and publications always welcome a spectator or a subscriber! Being a spectator at a dramatic presentation or any event shows your dedication to Grimsley, You, as a support for GHS, make up Grimsley because without you there is no need for a newspaper, a football team, or a cheerleader. Everyone does his or her share to make a corr.aiunity, city and a nation. By supporting Grimsley whether it be as an athlete, a reporter, or a spectator you are doing your share to make Grimsley the best school in the state, , ,nation! Take the 83-84 school year and make it exciting and eventful for yourself and those around you! Executive Council By Michele Martorano Studen Body President, Jay Floyd wants this year to be the “year of the student” and from the looks of this year’s student council, it will be just that. The 1984 stu dent council is made up of a beneficial combination of veterans in student government. President Jay Floyd, Vice President Karen Seagravesy Pep Board Chairman Tamera Major, Youth Recreation Chairman Michele Martorano, and eager newcomers, secretary Lisa Frazier, and treasurer Pam Utter. Using the experience and en thusiasm that lead the class of ’84 to set new records in fund raising in their sophomore and junior years, this council hopes to give a new meaning to the word spirit. Pep Board Chairman, Tamera Majors, has already begrun working on ideas for new spirit days and spirit weeks. She is also working on making; pep ralleys more exciting and lively for the entire student body. As Youth Recreation Chairman, I also began work over the surhmer. In keeping with the idea of the “year of the student”, I feel that Homecoming should be a very special event, I plan to work with the pep board and any interested students to emphasize Homecom ing as Fall’s big event. As always. President Jay Floyd has come up with many exciting ideas for both Grimsley’s student council and SSBAG (Student School Board Action Group), While continuing and emphasis placed on academics and athletics, he wants a greater emphasis placed on the pleasures of being a teenager! He wants to make participating in school activities exciting and eventful. Teen Life Center Offers Alternative By Jay The last, bland tasting, unpleasant drops trickle out of the warm can of Budweiser, The can is brutal ly crushed and thrown aside. The last, moist can is ripped from the stretched plastic harness> and steps two and three are repeated, “Might as well,” comments one weary, underaged' drinker, “Can you name something better to do on a Friday, night in the sprawling metropolis of Greensboro?” Yes, I can. Opening soon is a multi-purpose entertainment center, especially equipped to accommodate the most discriminating young adults. The teen life center was spawned by MoUy and Jack Eisenman who realized that Greensboro holds as mucbTheex- citement for teens as watching buns rise the project is valued at $200,000. The old, majestic train sta- Floyd tion in old Greensboro will soon burst forth with anew light. An elaborate, flashing dance floor, com plementary major motion pictures, and a video ar cade, (just to name a few items of leisure), will soon cover the vast floors of the already picturesque ter minal. Is it not about time? “Don’t drink!”, cry many moralists. “Don’t play that loud music! My lord! Did you see them dancing? No wonder the world is so over-populated! Now now, kids, walk the straight and narrow. Good heavans!” However, now, despite the backbreaking efforts of many, here comes the Teen Life Center and we wiU, finally, have somewhere to raise whatever needs raising, and raise it well. Lookout Greensboro, Here we come. Really! ‘The Depot’ So, with the dedication of the ex ecutive council and the enthusiasm of the student body this should be a fabulous year! Senior Class By David Satcyer It is my pleasure as President of the Senior Class to welcome all students to Grimsley tor me 1983-84 school year, I look forward to a very successful year at GHS with confidence and anticipation. Therefore, I hope the entire student body win join together in an effort to make this year a productive ex perience for all Grimsley Whirlies, There are many opportunities for us to unite as Whirlies. One of the best ways to achieve this goal is to be actively involved in the many phases of our school program, such as in athletics, music. High Life, the yearbook, clubs and student government, and to actively sup port the other Whirlies in these ac tivities. Another important part of our school life is academics. Even though studying can be the least popular area of our Whirlie school year, we still must continue to excel in our classwork, Grimsley is renowned for its academic ex cellence and it is a tradition we should be proud to maintain. In closing, I would like to again express my excitement and an ticipation as we begin this school year. We are all Grimsley Whirlies, so let us work together as a student team to assure a successful and rewarding school year. Junior Class By Billy Fuller I would like to welcome aU of the members of the classes of ’84 and ’85 back to Grimsley, and issue a special greeting to all sophomores as they enter the best high school in Greensboro, We have a great tradition and with everyone’s help an even more promising future, I think it is important for us to work together to develop Whirlie spMt and pride so we can reach our potential in every field. Our unity is very important to our success. I believe it is necessary for aU of us to assume the responsibility of working to make Grimsley the best it can possibly be. We have an all-around athletic history that is second to none. We are winners on the field and off. To me, it seems that this year should be all the better, I would like to urge every Grimsley student to show his or her allegiance by atten ding as many athletic events, social events, and other school oriented acti'vities as possible. Academically, we are very strong, I look forward to seeing this year’s students do as well as the Grimsley students of the past who established a strong tradition to follow. Although we have a lot to live up to, I’m sure we won’t let anyone down. We must all try to do our best because we are Whirlies and we are proud! In my opinion, if we all work together, this can be “our” year. So let’s aU give our best shot, and no one will question that Grimsley is the very best high school around, Whirlie determination, dedication, spirit, pride, enthusiasm, and op timism in athletics, academics, work, and play will spell our suc cess. Baur Welcomes Students To GHS ‘A Past To Build Upon. . . A Future To Fulfill’ By Dr. Bonnie Welcome new students and retur ning students. It is my sincere hope that each and every one of you will be successful in your pursuit of a high school diploma, but more im portantly that you have fun doing Baur be supportive of all school event Let’s show every team, and evei member of the team, that we ha^ During this year, let’s aU work toward developing our selfesteem, Grimsley High School is only as strong as the students who make up the student body. Our school has a history and a reputation of being one of the best in the Southeast - not only in academics but in athletics, service clubs, faculty, student leadership, and physical facility. This past can and will exist today and tomorrow with your support and effort, I believe the 1983-84 school year can be one we will remember. I en courage each of you to work in all of your classes by taking notes and keeping up on a daily basis. Along with your studies, take time to at tend extra-curricular activities and the best school spirit in the entire U.S,A, We do not “boo,” use inap propriate language or negative body gestures - they are “tacky,” Only the unintelligent resort to such immature behavior. If one disapproves of actions and/or other people, the intelligent and cultured person give “dead silence,” Read the student handbook and follow the rules and regulations. All of the administration at GHS has an “open door” policy. If you have problems, let us try to help you. Your student government is the best I have dealt with, and each member has enthusiasm and sup port for you, the student body. This year’s slogan is: “Grimsley Senior High School, . .A Past to Build Upon, . .A Future to Fulfill,”
