Throughout his remarks to the 800 students present from the four Greensboro high schools, the vivacious leader of the Cinderella Wolfpack club ap propriately encouraged the au dience to be dreamers. A native of Queens, New York City, Valvano loves living in the tar heel state and has no plans to leave to coach professional basketball. This was'evidenced by the ten year contract he signed with the Wolfpack team last spring. Before coming to Raleigh, Valvano had been head basketball coach at Iona College, at Bucknell University, and at Johns Hopkins University. The vivacious speaker admonish ed those present to_ believe in themselves. “Today’s society is negative. Everyday an average per son accomplished an extraordinary thing. There is a relationship bet- During the week of November 14th thru the 18th, students, facul ty and administrators alike will make an extra effort to signify the joint quest for education. Many ac tivities have been planned for the celebration of American Education Week. To start off the week, a student/faculty Talent Show will take place on Monday, November 14th. Auditions for the Talent Show were held Monday, September 26th. On Wednesday, November 16th, a student/faculty basketball, game is scheduled. Only non-basketball players, men and women, and non cheerleaders wiU be able to par ticipate as basketball players and cheerleaders. There will be an ad mission charge, and the proceeds will be used to purchase an Apple Computer for the student body to use in the media center. Continuing with this celebration, an all-day Education Fair wiU take place at the Weaver Education Center on Thursday, November 14th. By Alise Weinstein The Student School Board Ac tion Group (SSBAG) has its first meeting of the year at Camp Wenasa Boy Scout Camp on Wednesday, September 28, Ap proximately ten students from each of the four city high schools and the optional school met for a full day of group planning and ac tivities. News In Brief Merit Scholars The following seniors have been selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as the 1983 Semi-finalists: John Alspaugh, Phillip Block, Necca Dennis (a former Grimsley student, now attending the School of Math & Science), Carol Hartsog, Allen Leonard, David Lindabury, (also a former Grimsley student who is now living in Atlanta) Millyn Kelley, Geoffrey Neal, Dianne Timblin, and Tim Wood. These Merit Program par ticipants were selected on the basis of their performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests (PSAT’s) scores taken in their junior year. Each semi-finalist will be notified in February as to whether or not they qualified as finalists. Honors Chorus Two hundred and fifty high school students from all over North Carolina came to Grimsley for North Carolina Honors Chorus auditions. These auditions, held on September 23, were to “honor the best singers in our state by giving them the opportunity to perform at the highest possible level of achievement. Judging began at 8:30 a.m. Each performer had only seven minutes to express his or her talents. Students were required to sing their designated part and display ' their ability at sightreading. Five Grimsley students were selected for Honors Chrous. They were: Steve Howard, Jennifer Williams, Pam Dent, Karla Scott, and Karen Covington. Only one hundred fifty of the two hundred fifty auditioned were selected. The choral concert will be held November 20, 1983. 4:30 p.m. at Stevens Performing Arts Center, Winston-salem, N.C. Dr. Ronald Shirey of Texas Christian Universi ty will be conducting. Any student interested in audi tioning for next years Honors Chorus should contact Ms. Force immediatley. Whirligig This year’s Whirligig staff kicked off their fall campaign with a new approach to sell the yearbook. An assembly was held October 11, by the Delmar Publishing Company. Even though the campaign wUl last only two weeks, students may want to buy their books at the first sales because prices will go up with each offering. Yearbooks are being sold in the main office before and after school and during lunch. The price is $13.00, includes a clear plastic protective cover. The staff also of fers an installment plan of three $5.00 payments so that students do not need to pay all at once. Editor Amy Russell comments, “Our dedicated staff has put a lot of time and thought toward the yearbook to produce the best book Grimsley’s ever had.” (continued on pg. 8( Tirella will lead sophomores By Patrick Chilton The sophomore class held an assembly and elected officers for the year on September 28, 1983. The assembly was full of excite ment and enthusiasm as the class of ’86 heard speeches from can didates and filled out ballots. The four offices on the ballot were those of President, Secretary/Treasurer, Youth Recreational Council Chairperson and chairperson of the Pep Board, Running for President were Amy Cass, John Haines, ^ Kathleen Stewart and Stacy Tirella. All gave impressive speeches but the one who came out on top was Stacy Tirella, who is now the President of the class of ’86. Those who ran for Secretary/Treasurer were Lisa Marie Adams, Courtney Haber, Jennifer Savage, and Lisa Zaleon , Jennifer Savage won the crowd over and now holds the position. Despite still competition from Tina Baer and (Cindy* Banning, Lisa Warner was elected chairper son of the YRC. Carrie Stout, who ran against Cindy Gay, won the post of chairperson of the Pep Board. Although there are only four win ners, all nominees tried hard, and congratulations are in order. One of the main topics of the meeting was the discussion of the Little Four Basketball Tourna ment. Some ideas that were brought about for the promotion of the tournament were the sale of painter caps, t-shirts, and sweat shirts; a free-throw shooting con test and also a door decoration con test. Another topic of discussion was the evaluation of teachers by students.The evaluation process would take place at the end of the first semester during the exam period if the course is a semester course. For year long courses, the evaluation would take place at the end of the year. An evaluation would be given at the end of the year also for second semester courses. Along with the planning, there were also many outdoor activities for those attending this initial meeting. These activities-balancing on a swinging log, climbing over a high wall and moving wood on bar rels were to help organize the group and get the members thinking. (continued on pg. 8) Three nominated for Morehead By Carrie Milgrim Allen Leonard, Tim Wood, and Michelle Wulfhorst have been nominated for the coveted Morehead Scholarship. These scholarships to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are worth over $30,000 each. The scholarships were establish ed by John Motley Morehead to assure the University of always having a nucleus of the nation’s finest young people. Because Mr. Morehead wanted excellence in all areas, students receiving the honor of nomination must excel equally in the areas of academics, character, athletic ability, and leadership. Students cannot be deficient in any of the four areas.
