Volume L^V Number 3p Friday December 14, 1984 High Life page 5 Ever celebrated Hannumas? by Rachel Barger Why don’t we celebrate “Hanamus?” “Hanamus” is an imaginary holiday created by combining the good feelings and joys of both Hanukkah and Christmas. Since “Hanamus” is a newly created holiday, it can be fun inventing rituals for it, and creating many dif ferent ways to celebrate it! Hanamus is not intended to push one’s religious beliefs upon another, and its definitely not an at tempt to combine Judaism and Christianity. It is more of an opportunity or even a day or two in the holiday season set aside for friends and familys of both religions to get together and learn about each others beliefs and the different ways these two very important holidays, Hanukkah and Christmas are celebrated. There is always room for.each per son to learn and ex perience more about everything, and during these approaching holiday seasons, what could be better to learn about since religion is a very impor tant factor in many peo ple’s lives. Anyone can have a Hanamus celebration. This year it can be celebrated an any or all days between December 19th (Hanukkah) and December 25th (Christmas Day). All that is required to have a suc cessful Hanamus are two families, one of each religion, who are curious and would like to learn about Hanukkah or Christmas and share their own customs. Many people are glad to discuss the customs of their religions and what occurs in their household during the holidays. Just a simple discussion on each different religion might be held, or even bet ter a time could be set aside to accompany a friend along on a visit to his/her church or synagogue. Another in teresting idea might pro mpt a visit to a friend’s home to watch them light the Menorah candles or help a family decorate its Christmas tree. One of the most fun Hanamus benefits could be the sampling of the traditional Jewish foods or a friend’s grandmom’s Christmas dinner! Who knows, maybe if one is lucky, a dinner invitation might come one’s way! And of course, the exchanging of Hanamus gifts and cards could be enjoyable and mutually rewarding. The main theme of Hanamus would be for the people of all religions to share knowledge and understanding. An impor tant part of both Hanuk kah and Christmas is a general feeling of good will, sharing and caring of mankind. In addition to one’s usual Hanukkah or Christmas celebration, what better way to enjoy the spirit of the holidays than to share presents fun and good food with your friends regardless of religious beliefs. With these Holidays just around the corner, have a very merrv. hannv Hanamus! also adds that “Jennifer has a lot of heart and a competitive attitude” which inspired the other members of the team to put forth their best effort.
