On an assist from Mike Woodell, junior Steve Mann scored the Whirlies only goal in the game. After defeating Chapel Hill, Grimsley went on to defeat Apex High School, 6 to 1. This victory carried them into the semi-finals of the state tournament. Spirits were high and Grimsley students were supporting their team hop ing they would advance to the finals by defeating their next opponent Raleigh Sanderson. However, their hopes were shattered as Raleigh defeated Grimsley. The Whirlies played a hard fought game but their ef forts became hopeless as Sanderson continued to score. Although Grimsley did not make it to the finals the team had a winn- ing seson and an undefeated record in the conference. Smouse starts off with winning season by Pat Goodwin the season. “It was like we played two different seasons,’’ said Smouse. Many factors caused the team to have a somewhat disappointing season, but none more than the lack of depth. When a knee injury ended quarterback Brian Gay’s season with three conference games remain ing, the offense stalled With key defensive men Patrick Adams, Joe Var- samis and Chase Lavack, sidelined with miscellar eous injuries the defense gave up too many points “We were beat a lot by long passs and big plays that won’t happen next year I guarantee it.’’ So as Smouse prepares for next year he can be seen almost every morn ing setting at his table in the grove reading the mor ning paper and talking with the students and pro bable Photo hy Patrivk Forhis Head Football coach Jeff Smouse.
