’’This is the time
to remember”

Activities for Homecoming
have begun with a breakfast for
members of the court and their
escorts currently going on in
the media center. What is
missing is the early morning
rush of service club members
and their parents putting up
displays on the front lawn.
The front lawn displays
have been replaced with banners
which take less planning and
production time ITie festivities
this year are occuring at least
three weeks earlier than the
traditional second week in
October to avoid the interference
with S.A.T. and P.S.A.T.
testing.
Throughout the week
Whirlies have been showing
their spirit by participating in
Spirit Week. Monday was
College Day. Tuesday was
Switch Day. Wednesday was
Lick'em, Stop'em, Shade’em
Day. Thursday was Hush
Button day and today is Blue
and White day. The spirit
contineud at the bonfire last
night. There will also be a Pep
Rally during the lunch periods
today.
The Homecoming game will
be played tonight against Mt.
Tabor beginning at 7:30. This
is the first conference game of
the season and Grimsley
currently ranked seventh in the
state is expectedjo get an easy
win over the Spartans. Last
year's contest was a route with
the Whirlies outscoring the
team from Winston-Salem by
56 points.
During halftime the court
will presented again with a new
twist. Instead of junior escort
which have been used in the
past, members of the R.O.T.C.
unit will take on this task.
Crowning the Homecoming
queen during halftime will be
the high point of the
celebration. The identity of the
queen, who is the member of
the court receiving the most
number of votes, is not known
until the crowiring ceremony.
Y.R.C. Chairperson Tracey
Samet has planned the all
activities and particulary the
dance around the theme, "This
is the time to remember. The
dance which will take place this
evening in the main gym will
feature D. J. Sound Effects.
Checking out
the scenes of:
Interclub Council
By Javonda Davis
The homecoming season is
upon us. But anyone planning
to check out the floats and
displays usually scattered about
the campus, had better forget
about it. The Interclub Council
has decided to go against the
Whirlie tradition and replace all
floats and displays with
banners. This decision was
sparked by the shortage of time
and the nature of the event
What is Interclub anyway?
President Mike Webb explained,
"Interclub is an extremely
helpful organization which
works to put together all the
service clubs in order to form a
more effective unit" Composed
of all the service club
presidents. Interclub's primary
purpose is to serve as a liaison
between administrative
activities and the individual
service clubs each member
represents.
One of those such activities
may include an upcoming
fundraiser. Project Seedlinks, as
it is called, will be funded by
the Duke University School of
Environment and President
Bush's America the Beautiful
Campaign.
The project itself is designed

Vandalism strikes Grimsley
Bemick photo
Grimsley / Page vandals
mark red, white and blue
By Rebecca Gould
Since when does Page have
a blue and white sign? Since the
spirit of the Page / Grimsley
game drove students to commit
vandalism on the property of
their rival schools. This year in
addition to the traditional
caravans the morning of the
game, both schools were the
victims of pranks that resulted
in serious damage.
Thursday morning as a
caravan of Whirlies raced
through Page's campus beeping
their horns and doing creative
things to rev up their fellow
students(rumor is a bunch of
senior guys mooned the
Pirates), somebody spray
painted the Page's sign on the
comer of Cone Blvd. and mined
two other signs on their
campus. Intent on seeking full
revenge, later in the day after
the volleyball game and bonfire,
five unidenified girls came into
Grimsley's main gym and spray
painted their school name on
the walls and on the floor.
According to Dr. Crowell, a bus
driver happened to catch one girl
in the act while the four others
fled. After the police came the
girl revealed the names of the
others involved. Plans for
Grimsley High School to file
charges were being made Friday
afternoon.
Police officer David
Pleasants was on duty Friday in
the student parking lot." I
havn't seen anything all day
excluding the caravan". When
asked if anything can be done in
response to the caravans Officer
Pleasants replied,"All we can do
is tell them to leave". The
officers seemed to think
everything was going pretty
well for such an exciting day.
Teacher Joe Franks while upset
about the damage thought that
it might charge up the football
team. "They just won the game
for us," he told his sociology
class.
"Personally, I think it
stinks," said Dr. Crowell when
asked about the damage both
schools had received." Defacing
property that belongs to the
state of North Carolina is
terrible." Talking about the
vandalism in the gym he said,
"It was a stupid senseless act
and you better believe that
charges will be filed." At this
time the identities of the
vandals are not being released
but according to Dr. Crowell "
We're not dealing with a bunch
of rocket scientists."
Consequences they might face
are not yet known.
In the future Dr. Crowell
hopes that the annual football
festivities will not be
accompanied by such acts of
vandalism. "There is a time to
have fun but when it means
destroying somebody else's
property its' not in good taste
whether it be Grimsley or Page
High School."
