page 4 GRIMSLEY HIGH LIFE Friday, October 29, 1993 Editorial U.S. watches Bosnians die The war in Bosnia is too much, already. For two years the battle in the former Yugoslavia has been publicized by the media with graphic pictures of frail bodies greatly suffering from malnutrition. Even with these images, the United States has stood by and done nothing. The death toll rises while most Americans don’t even know what is going on. At Grimsley, if you stopped the average student and asked him about Bosnia, he would probably re spond with, “I don’t know.” Y ugoslavia has a history of hatred between its diverse ethnic groups, especially the Serbs and the Croats. In 1918 after World War I, both groups joined together as one nation. Both groups lived in the country but in separate regions. The Serbs soon started to attack the country’s other ethnic groups and took over the government. This lasted until the Nazi invasion of 1941. The Germans set up a “puppet” government ruled by the Croats wherein the Nazis encouraged the Croats to hate the Serbs, Jews, gypsies, and other minorities. Consequently, many Serbs living in neighboring Bosnia were slain. After the death of the communist leader, Josep Tito, Serbia began to expell Croats from its soil, while in Croatia the Croats revoked the Serbs citizenship and threw them out of their jobs. In 1991 the tensions between the ethnic groups had reached aboiling point; and Croatia declared its independance from Yugoslavia. The Muslim- dominated govement of Bosniaand Herzegovina was inspired by Croatia’s example, and it attempted to gain its independance. Egged on by Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, the Serbian minority living in Bosnia declared war, and began by reducing the city of Sarajevo to rubble killing more than 5,000. Today, the Serbs control more than 70 percent of Bosnian territory. The Croatians don’t wantthe Serbs to be stronger, so they have attacked Bosnia and now control most of the remaining 30 percent. Bosnia’s Muslims say they will fight on, although there is little chance of regain ing their land. A top Muslim government official said, “What choice do we have? We either accept the Serbian demands, or we fight on, in hope that the world will come to our aid.” America has not come to their aid. Thousands of people are dying daily and we just turn our heads. We don ’ t want another Vietnam, but do we want innocent people to be persecuted against just because of theirreligion? Each day Muslims are rounded up and sent todetention camps to do back-breaking work with no food. America is the only country that has the ability to do anythingabout this. We are called a super-power so maybe we should start acting like it. The Bosnian Muslims need help, and we should give it to them. It is time for Americans to stop thinking about the economy and start thinking about humanity. ADRIATIC A divided Yugoslavia. Students really don*t care By Ryan Robinson Beavis once said, "Who cares?” and to tell you the truth I really don’t know. Our so-called “MTV Generation” doesn’t seem to care about anything. Look around our own Grimsley campus and you will see students leaving trash in the grove, not doing home work, wearing jeans with holes in them, and not going to the football or other sporting events. And the worst thing is that you won’t think anything of it. Hey, this is just the way kids act these days. By acting as if we don’t care, what kind of society are we creating? Will we not care about the homeless, care about those starving in Somalia, care about those afflicted widi A.I.D.S.. or even care about our own parents in the elderly homes? Americans don’t care about anything but having fun. Drugs help us have fun, so we use them. Who cares if the drug ruins our life or kills us. We don’t study because it cuts back on our fun time. Who cares if we don’t learn anything to get us a new job. Who cares if we litter on campus. Americans are always having fun. Or are we? If we care about making good grades, we’re a nerd. If we care about the environment and ask people to pick up trash, we’re bitch. If we care about dressing nicely, we’re a prep. If we care about our health and smoke or drink, we’re a loser. So we don’t care about anything. Above anything else, we care about making it look as if we don’t care. MO-^ el FS PACOt^el Wasted resources Jennifer Pugh drawing Recycle Greensboro. If you have seen the brown trash cans around town you know that Greensboro is tackling a city wide recycling program. Greensboro is finally attempting to do its share in the fight to preserve the Earth. But in contrast to this, what does the Guilford County School System do? Because of misnumbered pages, new handbooks were reprinted and distributed to every student in the entire school system. Although the school system spent no money in the reprinting of the handbooks (because the fault lies with the printing company), it is a total waste of paper and resources for such a trivial error. If we as human beings value our planet, we should endeavor to take proper care of it and not use needlessly the resources we are attempting to save.
