UJrite this clown: Legends q hit
By Naomi Leslie

“...But her heart, her heart belongs to an
other, another...,” sings one brother in a
beautifully ironic ballad in Legends of the
Fall.
Edward Zwick, best known for his di
rection of “thirtysomething,” has created a
new epic. One Stab, an ancient Indian, nar
rates the story of Tristan Ludlow and his
dramatic life. The plot and camera iimne-
diately glue themselves to Tristan (Brad
Pitt) as he experiences love, death, betrayal,
and madness.
Colonel Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins)
raises his three sons, Alfred(Aidan Quinn),
Tristan, and Samuel (Henry Thomas), but
fails in keeping them from entering WWI
or passing the same woman, Susannah (Julia
Ormond), from one brother to the next. Jeal
ousy, combined with the torment of one
brother ’s death and Tristan’s periodic
crazed states, drive a long-lasting rift between the mem
bers of the family.
All of the characters in the movie, including Tristan,
seem removed and lonely. The things each loves the
most are either imattainable or taken away too quickly.
Alfred wants Susannah, Susannah wants Tristan, but
Tristan finds no permanent happiness in any attain
ments. Behind all of Tristan’s successes lie horrible
tragedies and solitude.
Violence and brutality envelop Tristan’s world. Murder,
suicide, fatal accidents, war, and bootlegging thugs push him
over the edge of sanity. Violence even reunites the divided
family with another dismal outcome.
Constant beauty keeps this heavy-on-the-heart movie
easy on the eye. Ormond’s classic purity, Pitt’s clean-
cut good looks, and other breathtaking scenery do not
allow the audience to leave the movie in an upset state.
The somber tale succeeds in producing a cathartic effect
for the viewer.
Pitt successfully portrays Tristan’s wild, lonely char
acter. Hopkins commands attention as he convincingly
brings life to the part of the colonel, even after his stroke.
Stellar acting makes this movie worthwhile, as the four
Golden Globe nominations assert. Legends of the Fall is
still playing at the Janus and Brassfield theaters in
Greensboro. Don’t wait for this one bn home video...see
it on the big screen as soon as possible!
Quinn, Thomas, & Pitt play the three brothers.

Cupid right on target for Mr. & Miss X
By Rachel Green

“I’m ready —to love you.” These words by Tevin
Campbell have special meaning to Mr. and Miss. X,
High Life's mystery Valentine couple.
“ Yeah that’s our song,” said Mr. X, gazing at
his girlfriend. “ We have been going out for 16 great
months,” commented Miss. X. The couple met about
two years ago in the Grimsley cafeteria when a mu
tual friend introduced them. Their first date was very
special. “We met at his house, and he cooked me a
romantic candle light dinner and then we watched
The Bodyguard,” said Miss. X , smiling fondly at Mr.
X.
Mr. and Miss. X meet daily in different spots
around school. Look for this happy couple outside
the cafeteria during late lunch. Mr. X is a player on
the Grimsley Varsity football team. The two worship
together most Sundays at New Light Baptist Church.
Mr. X is a senior and Miss. X is a sophomore, but
they don’t seem to notice the age difference. “The
age difference does not matter to us,” said Miss. X.
“I like so much about her. I love her personality.
her looks and her beliefs and her actions,” said Mr.
X. That about covers all the bases. Miss X likes some
of these same attributes in Mr. X. “ I love and re
spect his personality and the way he treats me. I like
it all! ” She squeezes her boy friend’s hand. Some
times she, well, tells me what to do,” said Mr. X
with a sheepish smile to Miss. X. “ Sometimes he
makes this one noise when he gets mad- it's kind of
annoying,” said Miss. X.
“My favorite
memory of being to
gether is last year’s
TWIRP dance ,” said
Mr. X. “Yeah, that was
a wonderful night,”
agrees Miss. X. Mr.
and Miss X are a great
example of love here at
Grimsley. Miss. X dis
played her love best
when she turned to gaze
at Mr. X and said, “ He
loves me — that is the
greatest gift I have ever
received.”
Can you guess the happy couple?
