Edward Zwick, best known for his di rection of “thirtysomething,” has created a new epic. One Stab, an ancient Indian, nar rates the story of Tristan Ludlow and his dramatic life. The plot and camera iimne- diately glue themselves to Tristan (Brad Pitt) as he experiences love, death, betrayal, and madness. Colonel Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) raises his three sons, Alfred(Aidan Quinn), Tristan, and Samuel (Henry Thomas), but fails in keeping them from entering WWI or passing the same woman, Susannah (Julia Ormond), from one brother to the next. Jeal ousy, combined with the torment of one brother ’s death and Tristan’s periodic crazed states, drive a long-lasting rift between the mem bers of the family. All of the characters in the movie, including Tristan, seem removed and lonely. The things each loves the most are either imattainable or taken away too quickly. Alfred wants Susannah, Susannah wants Tristan, but Tristan finds no permanent happiness in any attain ments. Behind all of Tristan’s successes lie horrible tragedies and solitude. Violence and brutality envelop Tristan’s world. Murder, suicide, fatal accidents, war, and bootlegging thugs push him over the edge of sanity. Violence even reunites the divided family with another dismal outcome. Constant beauty keeps this heavy-on-the-heart movie easy on the eye. Ormond’s classic purity, Pitt’s clean- cut good looks, and other breathtaking scenery do not allow the audience to leave the movie in an upset state. The somber tale succeeds in producing a cathartic effect for the viewer. Pitt successfully portrays Tristan’s wild, lonely char acter. Hopkins commands attention as he convincingly brings life to the part of the colonel, even after his stroke. Stellar acting makes this movie worthwhile, as the four Golden Globe nominations assert. Legends of the Fall is still playing at the Janus and Brassfield theaters in Greensboro. Don’t wait for this one bn home video...see it on the big screen as soon as possible!
