Orders will be taken during both lunches in Ms. Mylan's room, 861. Yearbooks will not be sold in the spring. Tickets for the 6th annual Grimsley PTSA Fam ily Tailgate Party on October 17th before the Page game are available at home football games and in the main office through Thursday, Oc tober 16. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 10. Seven seniors of the class of 1997 received the prestigious International Baccalaureate di ploma. These former Whirlies are Irina Bochkis, Leon Bochkis, Tim Danford, Betsy Hirschfeld, Ed Goode, Sun Jun Park, and Sa rah Roberts. The Scholastic Achievement Test will be given November 1, 1997 and December 6, 1997 at Grimsley. The registration deadline for the November test is September 26. Students should sign up for the December test date by October 30. Registration booklets are avail able in the counseling center. Grimsley science teachers Ms. Gaddis and Ms. Cea received awards at the Science and Math Awards ceremony on June 5,1997, Ms. Gaddis was presented with the Rookie of the Year award, and Ms. Cea received the Mack Baker/ Mary Kearns Award for Distinguished Service. New administrator brings experience, enthusiasm By Meredith Lemon Reporter — m With his gentlemanly, polite ways he is on his way to becoming everyone’s best friend, students and staff alike. Melvin Glenwood Paylor is Grimsley's new assis tant principal. Mr. Paylor started his career as a Chapter One reading teacher in 1980. He has since served as the principal of High Rock El ementary in Blanch, NC, and later Sweet Gum Elementary in Mebane, NC, so the role of princi pal is not new to him. Before com ing to Grimsley, Mr. Paylor was the Assistant Prin cipal of Dillard Middle School in Yanceyville and therefore is not overwhelmed with changes. “There is not realize that in every classroom there are stu dents who learn in different ways. A good teacher, he says, must recognize this and adapt the lessons to fit all styles. Mr. Paylor said, “The teachers (at Grimsley) are positive, upbeat and extremely motivated. Mr. Paylor will oversee student govern ment, substitutes, custodians and teacher evaluations. Mr. Paylor said that he was offered thejob at Grimsley and not assigned to it. He took the Job because he said it was a positive move. He also says that he looks forward to the challenge of working at Grimsley. Mr. Paylor will also evaluate the teach ers. He looks for two important qualities in strong teachers. First, teachers must first have a love for what they are teaching. Second, they must be able to teach their subject with energy and feeling. Accord ing to Mr. Paylor, the teachers must also Mr. Payior takes time during lunch to talk with senior Lanell McKellar. dents and teachers so far has made a good im pression, “Everyone here is hard working, to gether we make up this wonderful school,” said Mr.Paylor. ”1 came to Grimsley expecting a very progressive school and that is just what I found." -Mr. Melvin Paylor Mr. Paylor sees his most important goal as expanding Grimsley’s tradition of academic ex cellence. “I love working with curricula, and I am a good listener.” Mr. Paylor believes that with these skills and working with teachers and students, he can help make Grimsley an even better place for learning. Mr. Paylor exudes a kind, fatherly quality, which is not surprising, since he and his wife, Deborah, have three children, Rolanda, 12, Renita, 8, and Roderick, 6.Mr. Paylor enjoys spend ing time with his children. He said, “1 love to go fish ing, with my son of course.” Mr. Paylor said that he fully supports school sports and other activities. He has currently been at tending Grimsley volleyball ■ games and says he will attend more games as his sched ule calms down. Students can expect to see him cheering enthusiastically in the stands at the baseball games, which is his favorite school sport. “1 like baseball. It is played in the summer which is my (favorite) time of year.” If Mr. Paylor could have any wish, he would like for the students to look back on him as a friend, and as an in structional leader, someone to look up to. Mr. Paylor says that he has no changes in store for Grimsley, he is content with the way things are. “I came to Grimsley expecting a very pro gressive school and that is just what I found. It is a beautiful school, with a great staff. I am glad to be a part of it.”
