High Life Wednesday, April 9, 2003 News News from around the world Prom to be held at Starmount The 2003 Junior-Senior prom will take place on Friday, April 25, from 9 p.m. to I a.m. at Starmount Forest Country Club, rickets cost $20 for Grimsley students and $25 for students of other schools and will be sold the week prior to prom in themain hall. Last chance to take Drivers’ Ec The last Drivers’ Education class of the 2002-2003 school year will be held May 5 through May 19 from 3;45 to6;45 p.m. Sign-up sheets will be available in the main office. Students with questions should contact Herb Goins at 370-8950. GSA-DO honors teens with day of silence Grimsiey’s Gay-Straight Alliance and Diversity Organization is holding a Day of Silence on April 9 to honor the silence kept by many gay and lesbian teens. Par- ticipating students will refrain from speaking all day and will hold a group silent lunch during both lunches. Inter ested students should contact Mrs. Hands for more information. Al Qaeda mastermind of 9/11 attacks captured On March 1, 2003, the self-described head of Al Qaeda’s military committee, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, was captured outside of Islamabad. Believed to be the key planner of the September 11,2001 ter rorist attacks, Mohammed has admitted to meeting with Osama Bin Laden as recently as last December. Mohammed studied en gineering at NC A&T University in Greensboro. Long-standing Chinese political figure retires Li Peng, a key figure in the Chinese Communist Party and national political au thority retired in early March after 15 years in the upper levels of China’s government. Most recently serving as the head of the national legislature, Peng is most well known for his televised declaration of mar tial law during the 1989 Tiananmen Square Riots, and the subsequent deaths of hun dreds of protesters. Security Council overridden, US and Britian in Iraq The United Nations Security Council is comprised of 15 countries, five of which are permanent members, ten of which are elected. Concerning a the proposed reso lution to use force to disarm Iraq, any per manent member can veto the resolution, and nine votes, with no vetoes, must be won to pass it. Before a resolution, which would have likely failed, was voted on, the United States engaged in the disarmament of Iraq. US foreign-born population reaches record high Results of the 2002 Census Poll re veal that the population of foreign-bom individuals in the United States has reached a record high, with roughly 11.5 percent of the 282.1 million-person popu lation, native to other countries. Despite the apparent increase, the poll also shows that the rate of immigration between March 2000 and March 2001 was three times greater than that of the following year. Palestinian authority creates Prime Minister post On Monday, March 10,2003, the Pal estinian Legislative Council voted to cre ate the office of prime minister of the Pal estinian Authority, which is led by Presi dent Yassar Arafat. His nominee, Mahmoud Abbas, would serve as a key negotiator with Israel if elected, but Arafat will continue to have the final word in matters with Israel. The President has long resisted the creation of a prime minister post, fearing that it would weaken him politically. Japan to launch spy satellites In response to ballistic missile test ing from Japan’s nuclear-armed neighbor. North Korea, Japan launched two spy sat ellites to monitor further missile progress on March 28, 2003. So far, two missiles have been tested in their air space or wa ters from North Korea. SAT registration deadline approaching Both the SAT I and II will be adminis tered on June 7. The registration dead line for the tests is May 2; the late dead line to register is May 14. Students selected to attend Governor’s School The following Grimsley students have been selected to attend the North Caro lina Governor’s School for six weeks this summer; Karen Connor, Ruflis T. Fish, Meghan Hoffman, Ryan McCollum, Tanish Palvia, Mary Small, Emma Tho mas, Kira Vine, Tina Yin, Jinduan Zhu, and Dylan Zola. VHS holds spring induction The National Honor Society will hold a spring induction ceremony on Sunday, April 27, at 7 p.m. Selected juniors and seniors will be honored for academic ex cellence in high school. AP/IB exam schedule available The AP/IB exam schedule for May 2003 ; now available on Grimsiey’s website, http://schools.guilford.kl2.nc.us/spages/ grimsley/home.html Students taking AP and IB classes are required to take the exam in order to be given credit for the classes. Whirlie Walk raises thousands On Saturday, March 29,2003, every one at Grimsley was ready, and scores of students turned out for the first an nual Whirlie Walk, which raised over $20,000 from student and faculty efforts. In addition to free food and games, top fundraisers won special prizes specific to their grade.
