Page students des ecrated the “Go Whirlies” wall painting on the auxiliary gym by splattering red paint across the entire mural in a Jackson Pollock style with the words “08 Red Death,” the nickname for Page’s defense, emblazoned across it. Page students also splashed red paint on the ground and across the benches in the Grove area. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) quickly arrived, as did painters, so most of the damage was repaired by the end of the school day. While there were reports of vandalism on roads surrounding Page, the damage was less severe than the damage at Grimsley. Philosophy teacher Michael Courts found the paint can lid with its barcode still legible, specially ordered as “Page Red.” CSI was able to trace what store sold the paint, and if a charge card had been used, the name of the credit card owner as well. “Physical acts of vandalism in no way establish moral recti tude; in fact, it’s quite the con trary,” said Courts. Vandalism and misbehavior from Page students did not cease W U This Each year, principals from both Grimsley and Page set and communicate expectations for their students to respect community and personal property, and most importantly, to respect each other. Once again, students ignored pleas. that morning. When the Pirates won the game, students rushed the field, although Page princi pal Marilyn Foley had agreed to a new rule of no rushing the field. Page officials were inef fective since they were unable to restrain their students. Once students had rushed the field, they ran towards the Grimsley student section where they taunted them, threw rocks and bottles, and made obscene ges tures at students. While Page was the official victor in Friday night’s football game, Grimsley admin istration believed the Whirlies won another sort of victory, the moral kind. % Katrina survivors must still contend with government inefficiency, page 3 Ho mecoming candidates compete for the coveted crown, pages 6,7 Great-grandniece of George A.
