Grimsley earned special
honors at the Guilford County

Excellence on Monday,
September 28, at 4:00 pm at the
Greensboro Coliseum.

Surprised at her

humbled and excited about
her achievement.

said Brady.

President Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize,
questions arise over validity of win
BY ELIZABETH DETMAR
Editor-in-Chief
Joining the ranks of Nelson
Mandela and Mother Teresa,
US President Barack Obama
received the Nobel Peace Prize
on October 9. The Norwegian
Nobel Committee shocked the
world by proclaiming Obama
the recipient "for his extraor
dinary efforts to strengthen
international diplomacy and
cooperation between peoples."
Surprised, Obama humbly
accepted the award and an
nounced he would travel to
Oslo, Norway in December to
receive it. He also stated he
would donate the $1.4 million
prize to charity.
"I do not feel that I deserve
to be in the company of so
many transformative figures
fhat have been honored by this
prize," said Obama during his
acceptance speech. "I will ac
cept this award as a call to ac
tion, a call for all nations to
confront the challenges of the
21st century."
Many officials agreed that
Obama did not deserve such a
prestigious distinction. Nomi
nations for the award came
to a close in early Febr
uary, just two weeks after
Obama's inauguration.
"What has President Obama
actually accomplished?" asked
Republican Party Chairman
Michael Steele in a
CNN interview.
Nobel Committee Chairman
Thorbjorn Jagland understood
these concerns but held his de
cision and also expressed his
hopes that the award would
boost support for Obama.
"We are awarding Obama
for what he has done in the
past year," said Jagland to re
porters. "Some people say,
'Isn't it premature?' I'd say then
that it could be too late to re
spond three years from now. It
is now that we have the oppor
tunity to respond —all of us."
Obama now faces the deci
sion whether or not to deploy
more troops into Afghanistan-
a hotly debated topic as of late.
Other pressing issues include
working on peaceful relations
with China, and adressing
nuclear weapon proliferation
in North Korea and Iran. Such
affairs will determine Obama's
standing in his work towards
World Peace.
