Curfew curbs enthusiasm of teens
who enjoy downtown entertainment
BY MARY CLAIRE HURLEY
Reporter
Starting Januaiy 1,2011, night life
win never be the same for the youth
of Greensboro. During the last few
Qty Council meetings,aboiling topic
concerned enforcing a curfew for in
dividuals under the age of 18. A 6-3
vote on November 16 determined
the enactment, which states that
teens will be forbidden from loiter
ing around the downtown business
district from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am.
Teens also carmot approach
within 50 feet of any establish
ment selling alcohol. Exceptions
include teenagers accompanied
by adults, those in transit, and
those attending school or reli
gious functions. Violating the
new ruling will result in a cita
tion and a fine up to $200. Busi
ness management that know
ingly allows teenagers in their
establishments after the curfew
hour can also expect fines.
Politicians had much to say
about the issue, as noted on
WFMY -NEWS 2 website,
www.digtriad.com, on No
vember 16. Mayor Bill Knight
believes this new curfew will
prevent teenagers from falling
victim to criminals. Council
man Zack Matheny claims that
these changes are not in response
to the recent shootings at the
popular night club known as the
N Club during the past few
months; they have already been
considered for several years.
Qly Council believes these or
dinances win ensure a safer down
town environment. The legal
agenda attachment states that the
purpose of this curfew is to pro
tect juveniles from victimization
and exposure to criminal activity.
Council members who opposed
this change believe it is rmneces-
sary to prohibit teenagers from en-
joying the downtown scene at
nighttime because teenagers have
not been the ones provoking these
recent violent outbreaks.
"The problem is not the teens,
but what are the bar owners do
ing? Are they being responsible?"
said Councilwoman Diane
Bellamy-Small in an interview
November 17 with WXn 12 and
published ontheir website.
Is this what we have been miss
ing in our community? Charlotte
has had a curfew-oriented ordi
nance similar to this one since 1995
for citizens under the age of 16.
"What we have on the books
isnotworking. Something is wrong,
and we have to fix it This is a step
forward," said Bill Knight to 'TSfews
& Record" on November 17.
Police Chief Ken Miller, who
formerly served as an officer in
Charlotte and never encoun
tered any problems regarding
their curfew, supports the deci
sion to enforce one in Greens
boro. Miller also emphasizes
that the enforcement is not in
tended to crack down upon teen
agers or cause them trouble, but
rather to ensure they are off the
streets and arrive home safely.
Council also decided to
tighten up on people loitering
in parking garages and city-
owned parking lots. The pre
vious $50 fine for anyone lin
gering, doing drugs, drinking
in garages, or blocking an en
trance to a bar was raised to
$200 by a Council vote of 8-1,
along with an increase of the
fine for urinating in public.
Many members of the commu
nity are displeased with the
changes in policy, especially
those teens who visit downtown
as part of their weekend routine.
Such a curfew will certainly limit
the flow of business for teen-
friendly establishments, such as
The Green Bean, Greene Street
Club, and the teen club Inferno.
On the website of News 14
Carolina on November 17,
Matheny continued voicing his
opinion on the matter.
"The tough thing about mak
ing a new ordinance or a new
law is that it is tough to make
everybody happy," said
Matheny. "But you've got to fig
ure out the best way you think
will make the majority of citi
zens feel happy and safe. That's
the compromise or the fine line."
Visiting, shopping, and
dining, has increased tre
mendously in downtown
Greensboro. Contributing
factors include the luxuri
ous apartment building
Center Pointe, the thriving
Center City Public Park, the
seasonal ice skating rink,
the family-friendly home of
the Greensboro Grasshop
pers, NewBridge Bank Park,
and the newly renovated
International Civil Rights
Center and Museum. Each of
these popular establish
ments have brought new life
to the heart of the city. Only
time will tell if this new cur
few will help or hurt busi
ness in Greensboro.
Regal weddings spark public interest
BY AKIRAH JUSTICE
Reporter
Royal weddings are nothing
new considering that some mon
archies trace back hundreds of
years, but royalty marrying
commoners with the acceptance
and blessings of their country
men has become more prevalent.
Swedish Princess Victoria
married commoner Daniel
Westling in July of 2010. Gel-
ebration of the occasion involved
four days of events throughout
the streets of Stockholm includ
ing parades and a performance
by a team of 16 jet fighters.
Westling, now known as Prince
Daniel Duke of Vaestergoetland,
once ran a chain of gyms in
Stockholm and earned a modest
living. The two became roman
tically involved after he became
her personally trainer. Because
of his common status, Westling
learned of the royal lifestyle, eti
quette, and protocol through
proper training.
"I'm learning a lot of things
ranging from political science to
historia, and also here 'in
house,' so to speak. There are a
lot of things that happen. I want
to understand how this orga
nization is set up and how tasks
are carried out," said Westling
in an interview with CNN.
Another royal wedding oc
curred in late August when
Prince Nicolas, the son of
former Greek King Constantine
and Queen Anne-Marie, mar
ried Tatiana Blatnik. Although
Blatnik is a commoner by some
standards, she does retain some
royal blood. The two met in
2003 on a ski trip with friends.
She received Queen Anne
Marie's engagement ring from
Nicolas upon proposal last year.
Aghios Nikolaos's monas
tery was the location of their
wedding, and royal families
from Europe attended the event.
The bride arrived in a carriage
while Nicolas arrived by boat.
Prince William's engage
ment to Catherine (Kate)
Middleton is the most publi
cized of royal engagements in
the United States. After years
of dating on and off, the en
gagement is now official al
though some speculate they
will not last as a couple after
Kate appeared fed up with ex
cessive media attention and
therefore a lack of privacy.
William, son of Princess Diana
and Prince Charles, was no
stranger to the spotlight, espe-
daily since he is second in line for
the throne. After William and
Kate grew close during William's
college stay, he requested that the
media make an effort not to ha
rass Kate or make her feel uncom
fortable in any way.
Fed up with the media for ig
noring WiUiam's request to leave
her alone, Middleton temporarily
stopped seeing her beau in 2007.
In the time following their
breakup, Kate did still attend
some royal events, often tagging
along behind William, which re
kindled media speculation and
undesired attention; however,
the attention did not affect their
relationship as distinctly. While
in Kenya this October, William
"surprisingly" proposed to Kate
; they have set April 29 for the
date of their wedding.
"Td been, carrying around
the ring with me ... for about
three weeks before [propos
ing]. I would not let it go. You
hear a lot of horror stories
about proposing and things
going horribly wrong, but it
went really, really well," said
Prince William to, CNN.
Instead of taking money
from the British economy, the
couple will modestly and re
spectfully pay for the wedding
ceremony themselves. Even
though it will be a most memo
rable day, they are mindful of
the fragile economic state and
considerate of their nation.
"On scale. Prince William
and Catherine have made it
very clear that they wish ev
erybody to be able to enjoy the
day with them," said Jamie
Lowther- Pinkerton, Prince
William's private secretary.
Royal weddings always
draw great interest from people
all over the world.
"The TV audience for the
wedding of William's parents.
Prince Charles and Princess
Diana, came close to one billion
dollars, and the prince's 2011
wedding is expected to vastly
exceed that," said staff from
CBSnews.com in anticipation
of Britain's next royal wedding.
