Newlin joins family as latest principal
BY LINDSEY JENKINS
Photographer
Gregory Newlin, Grimsley's
latest principal, looks
forward to leading the faculty
and staff of this school of
excellence. While previously
working in Charlotte, he
recalled hearing about
Grimsley's premier status back
in 1997. Newlin had heard
impressive remarks about the
school's academic programs
and engaged himself in
learning about its affluent his
tory. Upon visiting the
beautiful campus for the first
time, he was certain that he
made the right decision in
accepting the position.
Though he had heard stories
about school disturbances in
years past, they did not
intimidate him.
Newlin's interest in
an educational career
began at the College of
Charleston when "Coach
Harvey asked for his help in
coaching a high school
basketball team." As time
progressed, he became
passionate about the field of
education and eventually
obtained his Bachelor's
degree in math. Newlin
furthered his education by
earning both a Master's in
Education and one in
Secondary Supervision in
Administration from The
Citadel, the military college
also located in Charleston,
South Carolina.
After his involvement
with educational development
in Charlotte, Newlin
recognized that Grimsley's

successes, and they're very
capable of handling situations
of any kind."
Because of his previous
experience in education, which
also involved administrative
roles at Charlotte
Mecklenburg, and Jordan
High School in Durham,
Newlin is eager to share new
ideas for improving test scores
and "bridging the gap" for
low achievers.
"The culture of excellence
needs to touch everyone," said
Newlin, who believes that in
order to obtain a perfect
learning environment, classes
should become smaller as the
future progresses.
"With fewer students in the
classes, it is easier for teachers
to personalize their students'
education." Newlin further
explained that with smaller
classes, teachers have
opportunities to cover
material more effectively,
providing more
individualized attention and
fewer class distractions.
To the relief of many
students, Newlin does not
believe Standard Mode of
Dress (SMOD) is necessary,
especially in the Whirlie future.
Hewitnessed SMOD in
a former school and disliked it
because it limited
students' individuality.
"Allowing students to wear
the clothes of their choice can
help them express themselves
and possibly even help them
build friendships with other
students with similar
interests," said Newlin.
Outside of the school
environment, he enjoys eating
a good cheeseburger, Oreos,
and ice cream. Newlin also
likes visiting local theatres to
view the latest film releases.
Additionally, Newlin is a big
sports fan; he is an afhlete as
well as a spectator.
His favorite teams include
UNC-Chapel Hill's football,
Duke's basketball, the
Philadelphia Eagles, the
Arizona Cardinals, and the St.
Louis Cardinals.
Music of various genres also
feeds Newlin's passion.
Favorite artists include
Otis Redding, Rascal Flatts,
Wynton Marsalis, Eminem,
Run DMC, Adele, and
Christina Aguilera.
Newlin appreciates the role
models in his life who have
influenced his past and still
hold an impact on his present
and future. His father, who
often reminded him to live by
the Golden Rule, "taught him
how to be a good man, how to
take care of others and how to
work hard." Dr. Calvin Wallace,
Keith Kramer, and Jackie Tobais
all helped shaped his views on
education.
While many members of the
Grimsley .family were sad to
see Anna Brady leave her post
as principal, they have
welcomed Newlin with
optimism, expecting more posi
tive outcomes.
"1 feel like Mr. Newlin is
going to be a good principal
because he is putting in new
policies like the moment of
silence in the morning. I also
like that he hasn't changed up
things too much so that there
wasn't a huge culture shock
when we first came back to
school. I feel like Grimsley will
continue to achieve success like
it has in the past, but maybe
we will grow even more with
a new leader guiding us," said
senior Selena Tran.
Audience in media center views 9-11 teiecast
BY CAROLINE GRANDIS
Reporter
September 11, 2001 was
both shocking and tragic for
the United States. Citizens
insisted that people
remember the day and
mourn the many innocent
people, young and old
alike, who lost their lives.
Therefore, several institutions
provided programs for these
very reasons.
Curriculum facilitator
Ashly Morrison organized a
gathering in the media center
on campus on Thursday,
Sept. 8 during fifth period.
Students and teachers viewed
a live telecast to which they
could send in questions
regarding that infamous day
and the impact it had on the
US. People answering the
questions worked for a foreign
policy research institute
in Philadelphia.
Students who attended
the assembly enjoyed it,
though found it rather
emotional, and learned
interesting facts that they did
not know prior to the airing,
which paid tribute to this
important Remembrance Day.
