AC Phoenix, September 1988 Page 15 Dolch, Bulldogs Set To Gain "Respect VI By Malcolm A. Pharr The 1988 edition of the Bowie State Univer sity Bulldogs will con tinue to improve as the 1987 club did a year ago. Coach David Dolch, who is entering his third season, is an optimist who appears to be more of a teacher and friend than a coach. Dolch's leader ago Bowie State was on the heels of Columbia University for the na tions longest losing streak. (32 consecutive losses) One can not help but to be optimistic when you have all twenty- two starters back. At one point during this decade size and overall ship turned a club that has been a doormat into a respectable team while posting a 4-6-1 overall. Don't laugh at this record because less than three seasons ability evaded the Bull dogs camp, but now there js a feeling of se riousness at Bowie and along with it come those necessary ingre dients for a winning seaspn. The offensive line, where football games are won, is where Bowie's improvement begans. Tackles Marcus Williams (6-6, 275) and Winston Lattboudere (6-2, 260) are one of the best pair of lineman in the conference this season. Runningbacks Tony Atwater and speedy tailback Tim Styles promise to excite fans throughout the CIAA this season. The spark of the Bulldogs has to be 5'11", 180, Don Janey. )aney was All-Conference as a punt returner last sea son, and also doubles as a cornerback. Defensively, the Bull dogs are as solid as a rock' with linebackers Chaun Gunter (6-3, 238) and )im Working (6-2, 260). Gunter had 111/2 sacks a year ago despite missing two games. The secondary fea tures one of the pre^ mier defenders on the east coast in 6'1", 197 pounder, Rodney Belfield. The All-CIAA Belfield garnered 110 tackles last season, while nabbing eight in terceptions. Corner- back Sam Muse is no slack in the secondary either. Muse had 89 tackles to go along with seven interceptions in the '87 campaign. What mosf people don't realize is that Bowie State had an ex cellent recruiting class of twelve. Five of those twelve are JUCO trans fers. The Bulldogs will get immediate help from Maurice Jenkins (6-3, 287), Tim McDuffie (6- 2, 260), Randy Norris (6-1, 208), Darnell Rankin (6-0, 290) and Tony Bennett (6-1, 230), Jenkins is an of fensive guard who at tended Potomac Junior College, where he was selected All Coastal Conference. McDuffie is a defensive end out of Chowan Junior Col lege who was selected All-Conference. Norris, perhaps the most her ald, is a high school All- American as well as All- Conference JUCO per former at Lees McRae as a strong safety. Rankins, was an All- State performer in Pitts burg, PA's Westing- house High School. Blue-chip freshmen Richard Thomas (QB), Butch Wilson and punter/kickers Jason Herold and Mark Fitz patrick could see light before the Bulldogs season reaches the end of this seasons tunnel. Livingstone's Bears Hope To Change History 1988 COACHES PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH NORTHERN DIVISION VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY Hampton University Virginia Union University Norfolk State University Elizabeth City State University SOUTHERN DIVISION WINSTON SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY North Carolina Central University Johnson C. Smith University Fayetteville State University Bowie State University Livingstone College By Anne Little Coming off a 2-8-0 1987 season that saw many close games slip into the loss column, the Livingstone College "Fighting Bear" gridiron squad will be expecting more in 1988. Fielding the entire '87 defensive will again in '88 be looked upon as the •"mainstay and back bone" of the Bear at tack. A difficult schedule looms on the horizon for second year general Coach William Spencer and his troops - facing the top five finishers of unit that successfully shut down seven of ten opponents during sec ond half action, this veteran half of the team last years' CIAA battle on consecutive week ends. "The team will have to show a lot of maturity and great leadership from the upperclassmen is es sential," says Spencer, “if we are going to challenge for the CIAA title." “To improve our record we must be more productive on of fense, improve; our secondary play and our kicking game." Top returning players for the Livingstone of fensive unit include top ground gainer Carl Robinson (FB-Jr.-5'9- 207), Ben Coates (TE- S0.-6'5-217) linesmen Kevin Caldwell (OT-Sr.- 6'1-283) Milton Griffith (C-Sr.-5'11-223). Back to key the defense will be DE's Greg Bacote (Sr.-6'4-205) and Walter Lowery (S0.-6'3-228), DB Wayne Cromartie (Jr.-6'2-185), and the "dynamic duo" twins James (NG-Jr.-6'0-221) and John {LB-Jr.-5'l 1- 223) Cunningham. ALL- CIAA in his first two years on the collegiate scene, punter James Simpson (Jr.-5'11-200) should continue to be a Bear staple. The 1988 recruiting efforts haOe focused on offensive additions Delwin Clark (QB), Marshall Cherry (WR) and Robert Moore. De fensive back Melvin West will look to com plement the "Fighting Bear" secondary.
