ST. AUGUSTINE'S appears to again be among the confer ence's top teams with Harvey Heartley back at the helm. Heartley took a year's leave during the 86-87 season, but re turned last year to lead the Falcons to a 14-10 mark. Lantham Alleyne is a versatile inside player, while Lashun McDaniel and Chaun Shell provide scoring in the backcourt. If the Falcons can muster some early wins in the Divisional race they could challenge NCCU for the regular season title. JOHNSON C. The basketball world and community at large have bestowed countless awards and accolades upon him. But Gaines seems to be unaffected by it all. Gaines started the 1988 season only .15 victories away from 800 - a milestone that only one previous college coach (Adolph Rupp) las accomplished. Anthony King is a proven scorer in the paint and the Bears will build around him. Titus Allen and Derrick McCarter should provide help along the backline. In the front- court, Dexter Price will be asked to solidify the young guards. FAYETTEVILLE STATE is beginning anew under the direc tion of rookie coach Raymond McDougal. The Broncos were among the most tal ented teams the past two years, but inexperi enced caused FSU a host of close games. Tyrone Boger showed flashes of brilliance during his freshman season and could be the backbone of this year's team. Darrell Har ris and Kenneth Sum- blin will also be relied on to held the Broncos better last year's 8-18 overall and '7-12 confer ence records. LIVINGSTONE is fighting for its athletic life these days and the Bears will find the going tough during the 88-89 season. The Bears are also rebuilding with new coach Ottis Fields trying to bring order to the program. Antonio Davis, who led the conference in scoring last season, has used up his eligibil ity so Fields must find someone to score points for the Bears. Williams and Robert Walker have both seen a lot of action for the Bears and will be counted upon heavily if the Bears are to improve on 87-88's 3-22 overall record.
