Page 17 AC Phoenix, December 1988 Conley's, Lady Rams Return To Championship Form by M.A. Pharr Lady Rams Coach Stenson Conley has entered yet another basketball season filled with uncertainty. After losing the tikes of play ers such as Angela Henderson, Carolyn Huntley and Keenan Menefee, the Lady Rams are due to have some lean years and a shortage of personnel. But these young ladies have surprised the coaches, as well as the opposition. The su perstars are gone, but quick feet on defense and heady teamwork is about to pay dividends for the Rammettes. Coach Conley will rely on the scoring and re bounding of guard Tracey Bobbitt. Bobbitt is a deadly scorer from everywhere and a fighter under the boards. Bobbitt has shown early in the sea son that she has come to play by scoring 19 Shelia Thomas, whose status has been put on hold until Jan uary, is a sharp-shooter who will give Bobbitt ample support. Rammettes forward her a prospect that bares watching. Johnson C. Smith, Shaw and St. Au- gustines will be the teams to watch in the Southern Division, while Virginia State, Hampton and Norfolk State ap pear to be the teams to beat in the North. Denise Conley is the teams mainstay in the middle. /Is the season progress Conley's con tributions should be more noticeable. Forward Latia Pem berton could be the Rams darkhorse future star. She was not really tested in high school, but her court savvy and good hands alone make 1 9 8 8 - B 9 IMTi RAMS BASKTIBALL PCeiER NAME Oj m POS Tracey Botbit 1 5’9 G CXirham Hi^ Durham, N. C. Conley Athletic lel^hcne t - (919)750-2580 On Friday, October 7, 1988, all the MEAC coaches met for a press- lunch at the Greensboro Ramada Flotel to discuss their respective teams and who would be the favored to win the conference championship. The luncheon was sponsored by the Miller Brewing Company with Johnny Randolph, Sports Information Director at Bethune- Cookman College presiding. While having assorted sandwich meats, salads and hors d'oeuvres washed with an endless flow of brew, compliments of Miller, the coaches each took their turn at the mike presenting the prospectus of their teams performance this coming season. The composite of their dissertations would, in the end, suggest which competitors they each feared and the ones they felt they could beat. All of their notations taken together, of course, would suggest who they thought would be the baddest of them all. Review The MEAC coaches in attendance included: Jack "Cy" McClairen- Bethune-Cookman, Steve Williams-UMES, A.B. Williamson- Howard, Ron Mitchell- Coppin, Cy Alexander- South Carolina State, Nat Frazier-Morgan State, Jeff Jones- Delaware State, Don Corbett (1987-88 Coach Of The Year)- North Carolina AST. Here's the MEAC outlook: season, but only scored an average of 64.3 points per game. COPPIN STATE has been a member of the MEAC and NCAA Division I basketball for just three years. Last season the Eagles came of age averaging 75.8 points per game and allowed their competitors about the same (8-7 MEAC). Now that the three year waiting period is over has a new head coach in Jeff Jones. He wears a heavy mantle being charged with leading the Hornets out of the doomed fate of six straight losing seasons. Last year they succeeded with a devastating 3-25 season. High scorer, Paul Newman will return to lead Hornets. FLORIDA A&M won its opportunity to compete in the MEAC frontcourt gems and its top guard after its 9-7 MEAC season in 87-88. Howard will be on the build-up. Tyrone Powell is the top returnee. MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE will come back this season with an experienced team after rebuilding hardships and maybe earn a winning season (5-11 MEAC 87-88). All- Rookie guard, Keith Race Should Go Down To The Wire BETHUNE COOKMAN will rely on the strength of its "controlled" offense and "sticky" defense. The Wildcats are ranked fourth among MEAC teams in scoring defense (72.3 points allowed last season) after last year's 4-12 Coppin will participate in the 1989 MEAC Tournament. The Eagles will be led by All- MEAC forward Phil Booth who averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game. They finished fifth in the MEAC regular season. DELAWARE STATE fc-.'.'WV'--. I - V’.'VV.'h-.',' Tournament Championship last season (11-5). With the return of three starters, a player who started two years ago and a long line of tall and talented recruits the Rattlers could go further this season. HOWARD UNIVERSITY loss two Williams remains their leading hope. MORGAN STATE needs to replace both guards, but the Bears are still ready to contend for top spot in the MEAC. James McCoy and Ural Hogans are the likely choices to fill the backcourt void (7-8 MEAC 87-88) Written By Nathan Ross Freeman Staff Writer NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE won the last four MEAC championships. However, they lost three starters and a top reserve from last year's team, and probably the candidacy as the preseaon favorite (16-0 MEAC 87-88), The Aggies will be lead by seniors Carlton Becon at shooting fonrvard and Corvin Davis at big guard with their scoring and experience. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE come back with a roster tall in size and talented in experience (three starting returnees) and ability after last season's 10-6 MEAC record. The Bulldog's forwards Rodney Mack and Steven Mazyck along with guard Darrell Gilmore will lead the attack. The Bulldogs will serious contenders for the title.
