However, the team is capable of pulling off 15 victories to push Gaines over the 800 mark. Ram followers have goften used to seeing the highly recruited hoopsters in the Gaines Complex. The Rams lost four of their starting five from a year ago, but that shouid have iittle effect on Coach Gaines' march to his 800th ca reer victory. Gone from last season are point guard Charlie Spell, wing-guard Steve Hood and bruising Gary Cro- martie. The surprise de parture came in 6'5" re bounding force, Kevin Reid of Charlotfe, N.C. Reid opted to transfer to J.C. Smith after coming up short during summer school. The Rams' top 9un is Mike Lesane, who began to make his mark midway through the 87-88 season. Lesane is on of the most explosive scorers in the conference and is probabiy the Rams have to a standout. Elsewhere, the Rams are very green. "The House" will look to 6'2", junior Jamaal Pierce to run the Rams offense this season. Behind Spell last sea son Pierce saw some action and showed that he could handle the basketball when the pressure was on. More playing time should help Pierce develop into one of the conferences premier floor generals before seasons end. Although the Rams lost one Charlotte native in Reid, they gained the eligibility of his former West Charlotte team mate in 6'6", 200 lbs., Lance Jones, Jones has demonstrated an intelligence for the game that few big men have done for the Rams in several years. Jones' defensive skills are his biggest asset to the Rams this season. Jones is off the West Charlotte 4-A Champi onship team of 1986, which was coached by Charles McCullough, one of the best funda mental coaches in the state of North Carolina. The Rams have been waiting on the arrival of 6'8" Toby Barber from T.W. Andrews High School, and this may be the awakening of the "sleeping giant". Bar ber, at 220, must use his physique to clog up the middle for the smaller Rams team. He will be expected to take the slack that Reid left on the boards for the Rams, and it is no short order. Other Rams who will be looked upon for contributions are 6'1" guard Chuck Swearinger out of Albemarle, N.C. and 6'3", sophomore Howard Byrd out of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. The Rams are young and untested, but as far as potential goes, it's a big thumbs up. If all goes as it should Coach Gaines should get that 800th victory before February ends. What the Rams lack in experi ence they make up for in quickness and desire. Could basketball be back in the "Rams House."? MEAC Basketball Continued from page 17 So, who did the coaches pick? Actually nobody picked anybody. But from all the speeches. comments, press releases and pass-outs South Carolina State seems to have the edge as the most favored. The most important commentary that can be made from all the evidence submitted is that with an almost balanced split between experienced teams that now need to rebuild and the inexperienced teams finally coming into their own, it could be an exciting season of upsets and turn arounds; a season that someone could not too unsafely lay odds to being up for grabs.
