Page 4-A, AC Phoenix, September 1989 Hampton U. to put power offense to work By Malcolm Pharr The Hampton Univer sity Pirates had the most explosive, high-pow ered offense in the CIAA averages 34 points per contest. Having lost three con ference games by a total of 11 points, the Pirates finished third in the Northern Division. Runningback Tim Dudley has a bone to pick with W.S.S.U. Runningback Broderick Graves. Graves beat Dudley out of the rush ing title by one yard last season. Dudley's sup porters cried foul be cause Graves carried the ball 18 times more. Dudley gained 1004 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. Fellow ju nior Mark Brailey, who gained 464 yards last season joins Dudley in the potent backfield of the Pirates. Junior quarterback Russell Johnson passed for 1572 yards with 14 T.D. strikes last season. Johnson's fa vorite target will be Johnny Barnes. Barnes had 30 receptions and ten touchdowns in 1988. He averaged 31.7 yards per catch. The offensive line is spearheaded by "Bnjise Brothers" Darryl Ryals (300 lbs.) and Walter Ki- nard (278 lbs.) Troy Gresham, who had 10 sacks last sea son will be the key to the Pirates defense, as will Stacy Saunders, who stole 11 opposing QB's passes a year ago. Linebacker James Chapman is a solid hitter and Levi Perry is a like wise performer. Bulls look forward to better season By Malcolm Pharr Last year was less than golden for the J.C. Smith Bulls. After nearly breaking even two year ago, the Bulls took a step backwards. Last season's dismal 2-7-1 record should improve this season with the ertiergence of quarter back Maurice "Mo" Flowers. Flowers, a na tive of Charlotte, N.C., passed for over 1,000 yards and nine touch downs as a sophomore. Flowers should improve on his 36 percent com pletion rate, and be come a factor. Flowers will be looking to Joachim Weinberg to be at the end of most of this season's passes. When not passing, Flowers and the Bulls will rely on David Wash ington to carry the ball. The Bulls managed only 382 yards in ten games prove their record. The Golden Bulls leading tackier from a year ago, Otis Praylow returns to anchor the defense. He'll be joined by linebackers Eric Wright, Hazel Williams and Andy Muriel. Steve r Tanner and Donnell Johnson will play nose guard and defensive end, respectively and Mitchell Hargett and Willie Cole will spear head the Bulls sec ondary.
