Eagles will try again for winning season
By Malcolm Pharr
The Winston-Salem
State University Rams
won the CIAA battles of
the '88 season, but the
North Carolina Central
Eagles won the war.
The Eagles knocked
the high-powered Rams
off twice last season -
the second time in the
first round of the NCAA
Division II playoffs.
There are some missing
pieces to last year's
team, but quantity does
not compare to quality
when fall practice began
Henrv C, Lattimore
and Earl "Air" Harvey is
not barking signals. The
quality loss does not
stop with Harvey. It goes
on to the defense and
the loss of all-CIAA, all-
America Robert Massey.
Massey, the second-
round pick of the New
Orleans Saints, was one
of three valuable players
lost in the Eagles sec
ondary.
Throughout the 80's,
the Eagles have had
one of the top quarter
backs in the CIAA. Ger
ald Frayton and Earl
Harvey are gone. Ed
Witcher will attempt to fill
the gifted shoes of the
Eagles' quarterback po
sition. Witcher will have
good targets to throw to
in all-CIAA receiver An
thony Cooley and
Reece Hargrove. Coach
Hank Lattimore, one of
the ClAA's most out
standing coaches, is
determined to take
some pressure off of
Witcher and develop
the Eagles running
game. Gary Leak will
carry the ball the bulk of
the time for NCCU.
The Eagles defense
will rely on Harry Ed
monds, a junior
linebacker who came
into his own last season
and led the team with 74
tackles. The Eagles are
hoping his leadership
ability and intensity will
rub oft on some of the
younger players and
keep NCCU near the
top of the division
standings.
Trojans' Cooper to lead team's defense
ANSWERS TO CIAA TRIVIA
By Malcolm Pharr
The Trojans have
been so close, but so
far away from the CIAA
crown. Last year was no
exception when
W.S.S.U. edged out the
Trojans in last season's
championship game.
Despite some devas
tating losses, the 7-4
Trojans of a year ago
and Coach Greg Goings
should be able to keep
things on the up side.
Much of the weight
the Trojans bare will ride
upon the legs of run-
ningback Clifton
Cooper. Cooper gained
728 yards last season as
a junior. He will be run
ning behind a quality
line in center DeAndrea
Neal (6'3", 315 lbs.),
guard Shaun Early and
tight end John Jones.

Neal is considered by
the Virginia State SID
(Sports Information Di

lineman in the CIAA.
The Trojans defense
will be led by Rodney
Nettles, the teams
leader in tackles last
season. Brian Nunn and
Reggie High anchor the
line. All CIAA defensive
back Anthony Burfoot
leads the secondary.
