Page 6, AC Phoenix, September 1989 "Journal of Contemporary Issues" grows up | FOOTBAI*!. PUEVIEW By Dennis Schatzman and Patricia Smith-Deering On November 25, 1983, two milestones w/ere about to be achieved. The first and most widely recognized was that Clarence "Bighouse" Gaines, basketball coach for ex cellence for over 37 years was in eyesight of achieving career win number 700. T he other was the re porting of this fact in Vol. 21, number 4 of the Winston-Salem State University's campus newspaper, the New Argus. But, it was not merely the reporting of that story that made this is sue significant. It was the fact that this issue introduced the Argus to a new and improved concept: selling adver tising on a city-wide scale and making a profit. It was the issue that began the union of Sam Davis, then Editor- in-Chief of the Argus and his newly obtained advertising consultant, Rodney Sumler, owner of Associate Consul tants. Davis wanted the Ar gus to make some money through adver tising. He talked Sumler into selling the space.
