AC Phoenix, September 1989, Page 3-A Shivers takes over Bowie State Bulidogs By Malcolm Pharr After being beat up years in the CIAA the Bulldogs handed out some punishment ot their own and finished the season 4-1-1 in conference play, and 9- 2-1 overall. The Bull dogs also made the NCAA Division II play offs. Formers professional football player, Sander Shivers , takes over for the departed Dave Dolch as the Bulldogs mentor. Sanders does not plan to change much in the Bulldogs run-oriented offense, despite the loss of all- CIAA back Tony Atwa ter. Tim Styles returns in an attempt to till Atwa ter's game-breaking an tics. Defensively, linebacker Tony Bennet made the all-rookie team last season and is primed and ready to make the all-CIAA team. Defensive back An thony Johnson, who was second in the league in interceptions, will be the main cog in the secondary. Kicker Mark Fitzpatrick scored 48 points as a freshman and returns to handle the kicking chores. Vikings get Waiton, former all-conference QB By Malcotm Pharr Johnnie Walton, a former all-conference quarterback who had stints in the NFL and USFL with the Philadel phia Eagles and Boston Breakers respectfully comes back home to coach the Vikings. After starting last season 2-0- 1 they managed to lose their last seven games by an average score of 33-7. The Vikings have been a physical team al though recent years have been lean in terms ot victories. This season the third ranking tackier in the CIAA linebacker Mike Mabry will lead the Vikings defense. He, along with Curtis Perkins, will be counted on to step up the quality ot play tor Elizabeth City. Quarterback Randall Jackson took over the reigns during mid-sea son 1988. Rodney Mc Neill is the team's lead ing returning rusher, and he will be running through holes opened by center Landom Mi- ales. The Vikings will have a tough going early due to the tact that they had no spring practice. The enthusiasm is there, and Walton is hoping that success lies at the end of the rainbow. McDougal returns as FSU head coach By Malcolm Pharr The Broncos are ex periencing a tough transitional period. Last seasons 0-4-2 confer ence mark and 0-7-2 overall record is indica tive of the troubles in "Bronco Land". One bright spot going into the '89 campaign is the return ot Ray Mc Dougal to the head coaching position. Mc Dougal, who held the interim head basketball coach last season, is Fayetteville State's win- ningest coach in school history. But this season he'll need more than magic to propel the Broncos in the improv ing CIAA south. The Broncos will rely on one ot the better players in the confer ence in 6-2, 225-pound junior Andre Bowden. Bowden has been an all-conference linebacker in the CIAA since his arrival two sea sons ago. Another strong suit on the Bronco's squad will be the experience ot the defensive backfield. Craig Saunders, Marvin Price and Leon McLockton all return in the secondary tor Coach McDougal. The Bronco's of fense, which finished last in total offense last season, could be lifted by the return ot quarter back Paul Stevens. He began last season as the starting quarterback, but an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. If Steven's comeback falters, then Willie Woodard will fill the void. James Bryant, who doubles as a kick returner, will lead a group of receivers.
