1 AC Phoenix, April 1990, Page 11 How to achieve political empowerment anriA nrkuinnton I by Roxanne Covington The Fourth Annual Carolina Blues Festival will take place at the Depot, 300 E. Washington St., in downtown Greensboro on Saturday, May 19th. The seven-hour festival will culminate a week of Blues activities in Greensboro. Presented by the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society, Blues Week is also sponsored in part by the Miller Brewing Company of Eden, the Mary Norris Preyer Foundation, USAir, the Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the United Arts Council of Greensboro, the N.C. Arts Council, and the Grassroots Arts Program. The festival, which will feature na tional Blues acts along with regional talent, will begin at 5:00 P.M. and run until midnight. Fleadlining the festival will be two of Chicago's finest Blues bands: The Kinsey Report with Big Daddy Kinsey, and Lonnie Brooks. Both acts have recent albums on Alligator Records. Among the other per formers will be Blues harmonica legend Snooky Pryor, a native of Mississippi who was one of the first Chicago artists to record after the end of World War II. Pryor will be backed by local favorite Bob Margolin, former lead guitarist with the Muddy Waters Band. Margolin will also perform a set with his band. Regional talent at the festival will be the Kerry Michaels Band of Reidsville, winners of last year’s Piedmont Regional Blues Amateur Talent Contest, Turner & Lynn Foddrell of Stuart, Virginia, and George Fliggs & Scott Ainslie, a duo from the eastern part of North Carolina. In addition to the evening concert, there will be a Saturday morning Children's Blues Show at 11:00 AM. and afternoon Blues workshops at 1:00 P.M. Both of these events are free and open to the public and will also be held at the Depot. A trip for two to the annual Chicago Blues Festival in June will be given away by random drawing at the Carolina Blues Festival. Funding and prizes for the trip will be provided by USAir, the Flyatt Regency Hotel of Chicago, and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events for the City of Chicago. The schedule of Blues Week events, to include concerts at local clubs, films and special school programs, will be released at a later date. Green Hill Center offering Eye opener" art show I* “Eyeopener”, an ed ucational outreach pro gram of the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, is available for presentation in schools, clubs and other cultural and civic organizations. Developed through a grant from the Grassroots Arts Program and the North Carolina Arts Council, “Eyeopener” is a portable “trunk show" of art objects created by North Carolina artists. The program is free of charge and is presented by a trained volunteer, providing a personal and direct art viewing experience in a small group setting. “'Eyeopener' is de signed as a program that can be adapted for pre sentation to all ages,” says Lynn Lazich, Green Hill Center Education Director. “‘Eyeopener’ has been well received by many different groups-from Girl Scout troops to se nior citizens groups and book clubs. We are especially excited about the number of teachers that are taking advan tage of 'Eyeopener' to supplement their regu lar curriculum.” The art works in cluded in “Eyeopener" represent a wide range of talent and tech niques. A feather mask, hand-blown glass bot tle, or hand-tinted pho tograph can be seen firsthand. Questions and group discussion about the artworks and the ideas behind them are encouraged. Volunteers are needed to meet the growing number of re quests for “Eyeopener” presentations. Sessions must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.
