Paae 20. AC Phoenix. March. 1992 REASONS WHY STUDENTS DO NOT RETURN TO UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES ACADEMIC #1 1. Had poor grades. 2. Did not have the right courses 3. Courses were too difficult. 4. Courses were too easy. 5. Instruction was poor. 6. Did not receive proper academic advising. 7. Did not study properly. 8. Was placed on academic probation. 9. Did not have my academic major. 10. Too much cheating in class. 12. Could not buy my books. 13. Lack of time to complete homework. 14. Courses did not seem useful for daily life. 15. High school did not prepare me for college work. 16. Was not able to earn the grades that he/she wanted. 17. Courses conflict with my religious/personai values. 18. Prefer four-year university with higher academic standards. 19. Academic advisors were not helpful. 20. Instructors were not helpful. 21. Academic subjects were not interesting erwugh. 22. Courses from communKy coilege did not transfer. 23. Did not receive enough credit for courses that were transferred. 24. Had a conflict in class schedule. 25. Going to change major. 26. Too many hours needed to graduate. 27. Instructors were too insensitive. 28. Could not understand the accent of many instructors CLIMATE (ENVIRONMENTAL #3 29. The university was too small. 30. The university was too large. 31. Treated like a child. 32. Office employees were not too friendly. 33. Would prefer a college with a different racial makeup 34. Nothing to do when not In class. 35. So many young students felt out of place. 36. Lack of dating/social opportunities. 37. Prefer a university with different ration of men to women (or women to men). 38. The activities on-campus conflict with my religtous/personal beiiefs. 39. Food in cafeteria is terrible. 40. Too much noise in the residence hall and could not study. 41. Too many rules and regulations 42. University is behind the times. It didn't have co-ed visitation. 43. Campus is unfriendly. 44. Was afraid to go on campus at high. 45. Campus police have nasty attitudes. 46. There's no place to park and will not walk. FINANCIAL #4 47. Applied for financial aid but did not receive it. 48. College cost too much. 49. Turtion and fees went up and could not afford it. 50. Could not locate part-time work. 51. Financial aid office lost financial papers. 52. Financial aid office did not file papers in time for a loan. 53. Spent personal money too quickly. 54. Had to work to support self and school and could not do both 55. No personal funds. 56. Could not get an extension to pay bill. 57. Applied too late for financial aid. 58. Did not apply for financial aid. ' 59. Lost scholarship 60. Father/Mother lost his/her job. PERSONAL #2 61. Was not interested in college. 62. Decided to transfer to another university. 63. Got married. 64. Became pregnant. 65. Want to be nearer home. 66. Had family responsibilities. 67. Felt racial/ethnic tension. 68. Was not ready for college. 69. did not feel comfortable in an academic setting. 70. Had a personal illness. 71. Had to support my parents. 72. Suffered from personal stress/emotional problems. 73. Was only upgrading my skills for better pay on my job. 74. Was suspended for misconduct. 75. Did not receive the benefits of personal counseling. 76. Dislike being around people who drink and/or use drugs. 77. Child care was not available. 78. Assigned to a different work shift. 79. Decided to join the military. 80. Prefer community college or trade school. 81. Had transportation difficulties. 82. Bored with school and studying. 83. Need to step out for awhile. 84. Was expelled. 85. Now disabled. 86. Student is deceased. PHYSICAL FACILITIES #5 87. Could not locate housing 88. Facilities on-campus were totally inadequate. 89. Too many roaches in residence hall. 90. Could not move on-campus. 91. My roommate in off-campus housing moved out. Could not afford rental.
