AC Phoenix, March, 1992, Page 23 Ralph Campbell Jr. Gets Audit Campaign In High Gear Six weeks ago when Ralph Campbell, Jr., announced that he had enter^ the race for the post of North Carolina Auditor, many political observers across the state breathed a sigh of relief. There had been mounting apprehension within the state’s Democratic Party for not encouraging an African-American candidate for a Council Of State seat. Campbell offered his can didacy, after receiving support commitments from some of North Carolina's top party officials and grassroots organizations. He is one of three candidates for the office of Auditor but the only African- American. Campbell, now assembling an ever-expanding campaign network has emerged as the frontrunner in the Auditor’s race. According to Mayor E.V. Wilkins of Roper, “Ralph’s campaign has'gotten off to a great start. His chances of being elected are excellent. With con tinued support we will make history by electing him to the office of State Auditor.” Logan Delaney of Asheville said, “We have known Ralph and his family for years. I am so proud of his accomplishments and his ability to see the broader picture. We will do everything in our power to help elect him to the State Auditor’s office.” According to political observers across North Carolina, Campbell has the “inside track” for the office. The fact that Campbell faces opposition in the May 5th primary has made it necessary that his campaign accelerate into high gear in March and April. Mr. Campbell has taken a leave-of-absence from his post with the State Department of Insurance and is crisscrossing the state daily. In just the past week he has held campaign meetings in Charlotte, Fayetteville, Erin, Wilmington, Durham, Greens- boro, and Raleigh. While most voters’ attention on May 5th will be focused on the races for President, Governor and Lt. Governor, Campbell maintains that the Auditor’s race is an important one and more dialogue on the position is needed. He stated in an interview with The AC Phoenix, “While it’s true many citizens do not know how essential the State Auditor is in our government, it’s the Auditor who is a watchdog for all tax revenues spent within state government agencies. When elected, I pledge to look under all rocks to make sure we’re using our money properly and wisely.” Bruce E. Lightner, the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s ‘88 campaign manager and political operative for North Carolina, is also a strong Campbell supporter. Lightner stat^, “We are building an impressive statewide organization for the Campbell campaign. It is of paramount importance that our people across North Carolina know that history is in the making, but we need help from every county, precinct and neighborhood. We are especially interested in building mutually beneficial coalitions with Native Americans, Hispanics, and pro gressive Anglo voters. Please feel free to contact me for more information on how you can help.” Campbell received a BA in Business Administration from Saint Augustine’s College in 1968. He currently serves on the Raleigh City Council (since 1985); Treasurer, North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus; Treasurer, North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials Association; and member: United Negro College Fund, NAACP, N.C. League of Municipalities, Wake County Education Foun dation, Martin Luther King Holiday Committee, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Wake Mental Health Association and the American Council of Young Political Leaders. Campbell also received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Saint Augustine’s College in 1990 and an Honorary Doctor of Christian Letters from Shaw University in 1991.
