She was a native of York County, S.C., and had resided in Winston-Salem for over 70 years. She was a faithful member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church where she served with the parent body missionary society, deaconess board and the pastor’s aide society. She was a member of the Community Prayer Band. Mrs. Howard was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 37 years of service. She was a member of the YWCA where she was the chaplain of the Unique Club. She is survived by two children, Bertha T. Roundtree and David L. (Russell) Hodge, Leonard Stimpson Mr. Leonard Stimpson Hodge was born July 14,1945, in the Bronx, N.Y, to John Earl and Josephine Hodge. Leonard, known to most as “Louie” or “Lew” departed the life early in the morning Oct. 27,2002, at his home. Visitation will began at 10:30 a.m. and the funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Russell Funeral Home in Winston-Salem, with Minister Gwen Monroe officiating and Pastor Theatis J. Jones, Nathaniel “Chilly” Fredrick Philippians 4:13 “1 can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” Mr. Nathaniel “Chilly" Fredrick Jones departed this life Friday, Nov. 15,2002, unexpectedly at his residence at 905 Moravia Street. He was born March 22,1941, in Winston-Salem to the late Willie and Roma Jones. He was a graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1959. His lifetime is reflected in self-employment at Jones Chevron for 38 years, (the only black private owned service station in the state of North Carolina) and Christian membership at Dreamland Park his entire life, serving as past chairman and member of the deacon board, program director of the usher board and member of the male chorus and Sunday school. He was preceded in death his wife, Rachel H. Jones in February 1993. Family love and devotion is instilled in the memory of him by two loving daughters, Robin J. Paul (Charles) and Rhonda J. She was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late Azalea White Mathis and James Mathis. Pearlene graduated from Atkins High School with the class of 1941 and continued on to the Winston-Salem Teachers College, majoring in music. She was a lifetime member of the New Bethel Baptist Church, serving on the usher board in her earlier years. Throughout her life, she was a musician, who often played for special occasions. She was also a seamstress and a homemaker. One of her greatest pastimes was nurturing and beautifying her yard. She was honored by former mayor, Martha Wood with a dinner at SECCA for her long standing efforts to maintain the highest quality in yard care. She is survived by her husband, Louis Porter, to whom she was married for 52 years; a daughter, Barbara A. (William) Glenn; two grandchildren, Patrice (Steve) Jackson and Willette Glenn; three great-grandchil- .dren, Aysia Glenn, Cherise Jackson and Cameryn Boykin; a dear cousin, Marie (T.C.)
