On Affirmative
Action
A recent Associated Press poll
found Americans theoretically in
favor of diverse racial populations in
college and willing to admit that
racial discrimination remains a
problem. Still the poll found
disagreement on how to remedy the
problem, with the vast majority of
Blacks favoring affirmative action
and about half of Whites feel it isn’t
the way to go.
International Communications
Research (ICR) of Media, Pa.,
conducted the poll for AP. The poll
found 89 percent of Blacks favor
affirmative action and about six in 10
young adults (ages 18 to 34) felt
affirmative action is necessary, AP
reported March 8. The Supreme
Court is scheduled to review the
University of Michigan admissions
policies April 1 in a major affirmative
case. School officials say using race
as one factor in the admissions
process is legal.
Morris Brown College
Gets Help From UNCF
Struggling Morris Brown College
in Atlanta will receive badly needed
financial help from the United
Negro College Fund (UNCF). The
historically Black college is $27
million in debt and could close.
UNCF will give Morris Brown $1.47
million.
The presidents of the 39 UNCF
institutions voted to help Morris
Brown, which is also struggling to
retain its accreditation. The
financial help was announced
March 6, during UNCF’s 59th
annual awards dinner in New York.
Morris Brown, a 117-year-old
institution, has an April 2, hearing
before the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools in Atlanta to
appeal its loss of accreditation last
December. If the school fails to win
the appeal, it would lose federal
funding, which is essential for
students who attend Morris Brown.
Fund president, William FI. Gray III,
said Morris Brown is eligible for
help until its final appeal for
accreditation runs out.
