Piedmont Craftsmen 41st Fair
November 19-21
In 1963 in Winston-Salem, NC, a group of men and women gathered around
each others’ kitchen tables and came up with the idea of forming a guild that would
involve both makers and lovers of fine crafts, creating a forum for building a wider
appreciation of quality craftsmanship. The group called itself Piedmont Craftsmen,
and held their first Fair in the original Krispy Kreme building in Old Salem in
November of that year. From November 19 to 21, the 41 Anniversary Piedmont
Crafts Fair will wrap up a year-long celebration of the guild’s past four decades.
While shoppers will find a wide variety of handmade work in all price ranges,
quality craftsmanship and excellent design have always been the hallmarks of
Piedmont Craftsmen. The annual fair showcases the handwork of more than 150
fine artisans from across the southeast in a setting that allows shoppers to meet
the craftspeople, talk to them about their work, and view demonstrations of craft
techniques. Exhibiting members include craft artists who work in clay, wood,
glass, fibers, leather, metal, photography, printmaking, and mixed media creating
one-of-a-kind works that enhance the quality of everyday life with their functional
and aesthetic qualities. In addition to the quality of the work shown, the Piedmont
Crafts Fair has a well-deserved reputation for an ambience that is relaxed,
welcoming, and beautiful. The Piedmont Craftsmen 41st Fair will be held at the
Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Piedmont Craftsmen represents the highest standard of contemporary and
traditional craft. Exhibiting membership includes artisans and craftspeople from
across the Southeast who has been juried into the guild by a standards committee
made up of exhibiting craftsmen and collectors of fine craft. Members range from
nationally and internationally known artists with works in the White House, Smith
and other prominent collections to young and emerging artisans. The work avail
able at the Fair and in the PCI Gallery and Shop encompasses everything from
time-honored traditional methods to work produced with cutting edge technology
and materials.
Fair proceeds support the programs of the non-profit Piedmont Craftsmen. The
guild conducts workshops, mounts exhibitions, and operates a gallery and shop in
the heart of the Downtown Arts District in Winston-Salem, NC. Shop hours are
Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:00 am
to 5:00 pm. For more information about the Piedmont Craftsmen Fair or member

My
Answer
Ms K,
I get so tired of people telling me to smile or do
you ever smile? You carry a sad face all the time.
Are you every happy? O.K. what is there to smile about? Ms K I have so
many problems that I don’t have anything to smile about. I see some
people all the time laughing, happy, nothing to worry about. Sometimes I
wonder what life is all about. My mind is constantly on how am I going to
solve this problem or how did I ever get in this mess. Everytime I think I may
be straightening things out the truth is I’m in a bigger mess. Could or would
you offer some suggestions on how a person could ever smile with all these
problems? I go to sleep with problems and awaken with problems. There
is no end to my problems.
“Rick”
Dearest Rick,
Do you love yourself? Do you care about yourself? Do you care about
other people? If your answer is no then there is your problem. To be happy
is to care. You DO have so many things to smile about. You are not trying
to find them. Open up to the world and let happiness find you. Try smiling
even when you are not happy. Other people will open up to you. It seems
to me that you are a victim of hatred to yourself and to others. Don’t worry
about how you got “into your mess”. Get your positive attitude to working
and get out of it. Some people smile when they are not happy. If you are a
pain to yourself, don’t try to pass it on to others. You would not go to bed
with problems if you would only thank God for keeping you through the day
and ask Him to keep you through the night. When you wake up ask Him for
a good day. There are so many good things in life, find them. You are won
dering what life is all about; life is only what you make it.!
Maybe you should stop thinking about yourself so much and start think
ing of others. We all have problems. We must remember we can’t make
other people miserable because of our misery. Rick, I think you are feeling
sorry for yourself and you’re not trying hard enough. I think if you focus
more on the needs of others, you will find yourself thinking less of your
problems. Try smiling more and listening to others with concern and care.
I’m sure you will get the same from them. I’m thinking that you are a very
temperamental or a very moody person. Rick whatever your problems are
you are not making them any easier with your negative attitude. Get out of
it, you can. Don’t give up. Remember the remedy for forgetting your own
problems is to help others with theirs.
I would like to take this time to wish everyone a very blessed Thanksgiving,
it is this time of the year that we can sit back and see how good God has
been. Give thanks for what you have.
Ms K is waiting for your letters. Your letters and my responses make a lot
of people’s lives happier. We won’t know unless you write.
