Page 10 December 2004 The AC Phoenix The Bines’ Story Sylvia and Eddie Bines were elated to learn they were going to have another child. On June 17, 2001, they welcomed their daughter Morgan into their family. They were devastated, however, to learn that she had Down Syndrome. Knowing nothing about this genetic disorder, they had no idea what to do. When Morgan was two months old, a friend referred the Bines to the Special Children’s School. Hesitant at first, they submitted an application. When they were invited for an interview and tour, they were overwhelmed. The school was bright and full of smiling faces. Everyone already seemed to know Morgan. By the time the tour was over, Sylvia and Eddie were convinced that this was the place for Morgan. Sylvia and Eddie had to wait only a few months for an opening for Morgan. The Special Children’s School has changed all their lives. Morgan is now a highly functioning three year old who communicates through sign language, gestures and sometimes words. The Special Children’s School made such an impression on the Bines that Eddie sings for the children during holidays and their son Tyrell volunteers during the summer. Sylvia has joined the staff, hoping to give back as much as has been given to Morgan. The Special Children’s School is one of United Way of Forsyth County’s 34 partner agencies.
