COMPLEIE EXECUIIVEIRAINING PROGRAM
Five Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools’ principals recently
graduated from the
Leadership Program for
New Principals (LPNP).

Ed Weiss of Wiley
Middle, Ronald Davis of
South Fork Elementary,
Sandra Gilmer of Forest
Park Elementary and
Valarie Williams of Philo
Middle were among 52
principals in the state to participate in the rigorous, 12-day program
offered by the Principals’ Executive Program (PEP) of the University
of North Carolina.
McCoy and Weiss were named the top students in their classes,
winning the prestigious Jack McCall Award for the elementary and
middle-school divisions, respectively.
The principals completed close to 100 hours of classroom
instruction over a four-month period. Major areas of study included
teacher effectiveness, instructional improvement, school finance,
teacher support, data analysis, technology utilization, diversity,
integrity and vision. Books and articles on school improvement and
leadership, student development, and school improvement were
read and discussed.
“The goal of this program,” said director Dr. Chris Hitch, “is to
help principals better understand their roles, refine their skills and
become more effective school leaders. The Leadership Program for
New Principals allows school leaders time to think about improve
ment that can be made for their students and to share ideas with
other principals.”

SHELTON NAMED DIRECTOR
OF FORSYTH TECH
GRANTS OFFICE

21, 2006) - Ron Shelton has been
named director of the Grants Office at
Forsyth Technical Community College.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
mathematics from Catawba College in
Salisbury N.C.
Prior to joining Forsyth Tech Shelton
worked for AT&T and Lucent
Technologies for 30 years in Sales and
Marketing. Shelton is responsible for
researching and writing proposals for
government grants and private founda
tions, as well as examining alternative
funding sources for the college.
Forsyth Technical Community College offers associate degrees,
