Effective immediately, the duties of Assistant City Manager Derwick Paige have been expanded and he will assume the title of deputy city manager. Additionally, the assistant city manager position that has been vacant since Garrity became city manager will be filled by Martha Wheelock. Wheelock, who is currently serving as deputy finance officer, will assume her new duties Sept. 18. The appointments follow a review of the demands on the city’s management team. Based on that review, Garrity made the appoint ments, which include shifting some roles among staff. Paige, who as assistant city manager was responsible for economic and community development, human relations, recreation, real estate, housing, and the minority/ women’s business enterprise program, will take on the added responsibilities of planning, inspections, zoning, and vegetation man agement. " Paige began his career with the city in 1984 as a police officer. After advancing to sergeant, he moved in 1990 to the city-county planning board as a pro fessional planner specializing in zoning cases and other aspects of land use administration. From 1995 through 2003, he served in various specialized eco nomic development capacities and also served as an analyst in the city’s budget department. In 2003, he was appointed assistant city manager.
