At 90, this renowned freedom fighter spent nearly a third of his life, 27 years, locked up in a South African prison. In addition, he spent another 15 years running and hiding from the law he was fighting. What manner of man would take on such a task—the overthrow of an ille gitimate government that once put a million dollar price tag on his head, dead or alive? And how did he manage to stay sane for 27 years? What kept him from losing his mind? And just how did he go to prison as a lowly inmate only to emerge decades later as the President of the country and of a government that once tried mightily to kill him? The incredible journey of Nelson Mandela, from prisoner to president, should remind all of us of the awesome power of God who is still in the mira cle-making business. Williams By John Raye If you believe in miracles but have never seen or experienced any, then an abun dance of “real-life miracies” will be on dis play at Winton-Salem State University, 7pm, Saturday, November 1, 2008, it was PREPARING FOR POST-ELECTION CHANGE WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) will hold its fall installment of The Neighborhood Institute for Community Leadership (NICL) beginning Wednesday November 5th- November 8th. The Neighborhood Institute, which wiil take piace at the Goler Family Enrichment Center, wili be geared specifically at continuing post election organizing efforts in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. The purpose of the conference wili be to train and prepare new community organizers for the ongoing work of being active change agents in community. The NICL conference is a bian nual event designed to inform community leaders, neighbor hood groups, community development representatives and small non-profits of the techniques of organizing, mobilizing communities, and creating positive change. This year's fall Institute will feature three continuous days of training devoted to community organizing, community asset mapping, and conflict resolution, among other sessions. The formal theme for the fall institute is: “From Mobilize to Organize: Building Positive Change in Your Community." Ms. Deena Hayes of Greensboro, NC "The idea is to shift communities from a mobilizing mentality that occurs during an election year to preparation for long term change," said Dee Washington, Program officer for NBN and coordinator of the conference. "The most important realization for anyone this election year should be that, after the ballots are cast, their continued involvement will be needed in order to maintain and galvanize the work in our communities."
