March 11, 1932 QUEENS BLUES Page Three SOCIETY ic=:i Mary Brown Guest o Honor at Lovely Te On Monday, February 29th, at the home of Mrs. Booker, the Foods III class entertained at a lovely tea, in honor of Mary Brown, who was celebrating her twentieth birthday. The guests were greeted at the door by Jane Renfrew and Eliza beth Shelton. The guest of honor was assisted in receiving by her mother, Mrs. W. C. Brown, of Barium Springs. In the dining room, the table was graced by. a low centerpiece of snap dragons, narcissus, carna tions and lighted tapers. Ruth Sweeney poured tea, while mints, nuts, and birthday cake, were served by other mem' bers of the class. The guests included: Mrs. W. C. Brown, Mrs. J. M. Renfrow, Miss McLean, Miss Forman, Car olyn Arnette, Lottie Lane Joyner, Blanche Coley, Elizabeth Thomp son, Evelyn McMillan, and Mar garet Cathey. Miss Edwards Gives Tea Betty Harrison, Mamie Hunter, Marie Wilkinson, Mary Guy, Amaryllis Ariail, Mary Frances Austell, Clare Hazel, and Jeanette Malloy were complimented by Miss Edwards, their faculty ad visor, with a tea given on Monday afternoon from 4:30 to 6 o’clock at the Kappa Kappa Chi House. After a pleasant social hour, re freshments were served. Margaret Miller is going home with Reid Ramseur this week-end, presumably to recuperate from Queens’ Blues. Dark Blues Go On A Hike Frances Johanson, Olivia Curlee, Lib Mason, and Ruth Kale, mem bers of the Dark Blue team, tum bled out of bed brigljt and early Saturday morning to go on a bike. They met in front of Main Building at six o’clock and hiked down through the woods into the I’Wamjis, where they bogged up almost to their knees. And did they have fun? Just ask them. I’rue enough, they say the bacon tasted mighty good when they walked up just in time for break- [fast. Beta Pi Theta Meets Friday Interesting Program on France Given Beta Pi Theta met on Friday afternoon, February 26, in the Hut. In the absence of the presi dent, Virginia Anderson took charge of the program. “Travel ing in France” was the topic for discussion. Virginia Anderson, Carolyn Lillard, Harriet Guerin, and Frances Rippelmeyer gave talks on “French Railways,” “French Hotels,” and “Scenic Spots in France.” After the meeting, sandwiches, tea, and mints in the Beta Pi I beta colors were served. Alpha Omicron of Kappa Delta announces the initiation of Ruth van der Maaten, Minna Le Grand, Martha Carnes, Evelyn McMil lan, and Betty Stough. Gamma Gamma of Alpha Gam ma Delta announces the initiation of Marie Wilkinson, Dorothy Pat terson, Margaret Floyd, Virginia Barrow, and Katherine McLesky. Classical Club Has Meeting Poetry Club Holds Meeting Entertained at Kappa Afternoon. Ruth van der Maaten Honors Father Virginia Sampson entertained members of the Poetry Club Wednesday afternoon, March 2. A discussion of John Masefield, Poet Laureate of England, was led by Virginia Sampson, and several of his poems were read by Caroline Akers an,d Mrs Townend. At the close of the meeting at tractively cut sandwiches, cake and tea were served by Mrs. Sampson b^JPP^i Kappa Chi announces the initiation of Virginia Parsons, Grace Hubbard, Mary Hubbard, Rupert Perry, Malvine Asbury’ Ruby Pennington, Rosa Lee Pen nington, Lynn Sanders, Elizabeth Cassels, and Eleanor Woodcock. Theta Gamma of Chi Omega an nounces the initiation of Mar garet Guy, Mary Pope Murray, Clare Hazel, Adeline Woolley and Ruth Currie. Members Delightfully Entertained by Mary Law Gray, Rebeka Hen derson, and Margaret Neale Mary Law Gray was hostess to the Classical Club Thursday after noon. Assisting Miss Gray as as hostesses were Rebeka Hen derson, Amy Hodges, and Mar garet Neal. Amy Hodges gave a talk on Roman Dress, for which Mary Law Gray and Rebeka Hen derson acted as models. They wore the Roman tunic, toga, and sandals. Games pertaining to St. Pat rick’s Day were played by the members. At the close of the .social hour, ice cream and green iced cakes, with green and white mints were served by the host esses. The library looks natural again with Miss Harrell back at her desk again. Malvine Asbury Has Art Club Mary Steere and Alice Gotham Give Life and Works of Van Dyke On Thursday, March the third, Malvine Asbury entertained the members of the Art Club at her home in Myers Park. Van Dyke and his works were studied at this meeting of the club. Mary Steere read a paper on the Life of Van Dyke, and Alice Cotham talked on his works. At the conclusion of the pro gram, the hostess served cake and coffee. The members present were, Lou Martin Miller, Grace Walker, Alice Cotham, Mary Steere, and Sarah Ashcraft, A school newspaper is a great in vention The school gets all the fame; Hie printer gets all the money. Delta House With Informal Tea Ruth I'an der Maaten delight fully entertained from 3:00 until 5 :00 with an informal tea at the Kappa Delta house on Saturday, March 6, honoring her father, Rev. C. E. van der Maaten, who spent the week-end in Charlotte. The guests were greeted at the door by Ruth, who wore black velvet. Minna Le Grand, wearing brown chiffon, assisted the hos tess. Delicious refreshments, con sisting of coffee, individual iced cakes, and mints, were served. The St. Patrick motif was carried out in conjunction with the Kappa Delta colors, green and white. Evelyn McMillan and Mary Shel ton Pridgen assisted with the serving. About sixty guests called dur ing the afternoon to meet Rev. van der Maaten. Spring Holidays Coming Soon Everyone is looking forward to Spring Holidays with much en thusiasm. They begin at 10:30 Thursday, March 24, and close at 9 o’clock Wednesday, March 30. This will be the first time some have been home since the Christ mas Holidays and those who will be unable to go home for these holidays will enjoy the short rest just the same. Beta Iota of Alpha Delta Pi an nounces the initiation of Rachel Boyer, Josephine Cornwell, Vir ginia Boyd, Blanche Coley, Jane Smith, Virginia Carey, Josephine Duncan, Sarah Kirkland, and Carolyn Akers. Delta Redecorates New Radio Is Installed, New Chan deliers Put Up, and Furniture Done Over I he Pi Delta Literary Society has greatly improved its hall in the last few weeks, by the addi tion of an RCA radio and new chandeliers. Some of the couches and chairs have been repainted, also.
