Page Four QUEENS BLUES March 24, 1933 From the Freshmen As freshmen—, we have l)een trying- to publish a paper that will interest our student body and faculty, but we don’t know whether we have succeeded or not. We have done our best; however, and we hope you are enjoying it. A public utilities agent was once inspecting some work where a new side-walk was be ing laid. As he stood there looking on, he thought to him self that some people like ab stract things, others like con crete., Just then a little boy came running out of his house and stepped into the fresh cement. I've made a serious mistake in my calculations per haps, thought the inspector; I ])refer little boys in the ab stract. W'e, as beginners here at Oueens-Chicora, thank you all for giving us a chance. We ap- ])reciate the fact that you have let us in to help mold the de sign ])efore the concrete was too hard. If we have reinforced the concrete any, we are glad; and, if we have spoiled any of your work, we want 5'ou to show us l)etter ways for the future. HAMPTON QUARTET Pallet and Brush On Tuesday afternoon, March 14, the Queens-Chicora Pallet and Brush Club, attended the exhibi tion of oil paintings now on dis play at the Woman's Club. The pictures are of deserts and plains, colored canyons, Indians, and bright-hued flowers. This exhibition is l)eing circu lated by the American Federation of Art and was arranged for Char lotte by Leila Mechlin, national secretary. The exhibit will be on display this month and the public is cordially invited. There is no admission charge. Beta Pi Theta (Continued from page one) Air. Pope stated that more than one-tenth of the ]topulation ol the United States are negroes, lie said there were three stages in the economic development of the negro at present — luck, change of development in negro customs, and foresight of a few thinking negroes. He stated, moreover, the three things need ful in willingness to accept re- s])onsibility - perseverence, court eousness, and tactfulnes. After this talk the quartet sang four m ore n u m b e r s: "Water Boy," "Gonna Shout All Over God’s Heaven,” "Your Sheep Don’t Know the Road,” and "Mighty Like a Rose.” Then Air. Re3molds made a short talk on the follow ing subjects: (1) Y’ithout schools Beta Pi Theta invited Le Cercle Francais from Davidson to enter tain for the evening, Wednesday, Alarch 5. The members of Le Cercle Francais presented a-n in teresting comedy, “L’Anglais Tel Qu’on le Parle”—(English : As It Is Spoken) and a short scene, "Knock." Although man}' in the audience did not understand, the synopsis preceding and actions of the chat - acters helped them to know what was being said. The !to} ;■ seemed fluent in speaking French. Preceding the Davidson ])ro- gram. Beta Pi Theta presented an amusing dialogue, "L’heure de la Soupe”—(The Dinner Hour), followed by two songs, sung by our girl's (juartet. and ambition there would be no hope for the negro; (2) W’e can’t afford to have fear and hate between the races. The last four spirituals were: " W ere You There W'hen They Crucified My Lord?” “If You Love Jesus Serve Him,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” and "Steal Awav." To the Sophomores Yours was a great issue! You have heard this joke I know, but I want to repeat it. A professor was crossing a river by ferry. Since he had no companions with him he began talking to the boatman. “Have you studied jxsychol- ogy?” “No.” “Well, that’s bad. Part of your life is lost. Have you ever studied English?” “No, I’ve never been to school very much.” “Aly goodness! WTy, half of your life is gone. Have you a good knowledge of mathe matics?” “No, I guess you think my life is all gone.” Just then the crack in the bottom of the ferry enlarged to such an extent that the boat Iregan to sink. “Excuse me, but do you know how to swim, professor?” “No." 'AVell, your whole life is gone!" And that’s the way we feel, sophomores. If you had not published the first edition we would have been “sunk.” LOUIS M.
