In the past it has been difficult for the day stu dents to secure an inexpensive hot lunch at the college. Many of the girls have resorted to going to Myers Park School for meals. This is in convenient in bad weather, however. Two energetic day students. Bill Stout and Lib Isaacs have under taken the task of preparing hot dogs for the studen^. They are working against adverse conditions in the in adequate kitchen of Blair Union. Any morning the delicious aroma of onions, sauerkraut, and weiners may be noticed in the building. These two girls cook the weiners and serve them with all the necessary accom paniments which make this popular food so delightful. Through their industriousness the craving for this favorite American delicacy is satis fied. This project is not operated for profit but merely as a service to the day students. Each pledge was given a bracelet with the sorority seal on it as a favor. The banquet was held at the Hotel Charlotte. Third Term The third term question is settled, Grade Allen will run for it, having just thrown a new spring hat in the bull ring. Contrary to popular im pression, Gracie will serve her third term in the White House, not in kindergarten. Gracie’s idea, is to serve a third term first, and then when she gets around to her ninth year in the White House, she’ll be running for her first term, and there’s no tradi tion about that. Miss Allen was nominated by her own political party, the Surprise Butcher Baker Quick Watson Elmer Davis, CBS news analyst, has just surprised everyone too, with the revelation of his membership in the Baker Street Irregulars. Ir regular is the-word for it, all right, because the society has met just twice in the hast six years. The president, or Gasogene, of the Baker Street Irregulars is Chris topher Morley, famous novelist and essayist. He is called the Gasogene because that’s the English name for a syphon (for mixing drinks) which Sherlock Holmes kept in his flat in Baker Street. This should give every thing away: 'Phe Baker Street Ir regulars devote their spare time to finding out things about Sherlock Holmes which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle neglected to mention, or just hinted at. The B. S. I. have just published a book of essays bringing to light cer tain hitherto unknown facts of Holmes’ life: His financial situa tion, his American ancestry, his early boyhood. The book is titled 221B, which was the number of Holmes’ residence on Baker Street. Elmer Davis’ essay deals with the love affairs of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Sherlock didn’t have any, according to Davis, but this is not true of Dr. Watson. TWO RECITALS ARE GIVEN (continued from page one, col. two) Rogers, organ, Lucielle Gwaltney of Charlotte. And “Chansonette’—Triml, piano, Ruth McCord of Charlotte; “(Honnais tu le pays”—Thomas, voice, Esther Love Hillhouse of Calhoun, Ga.; “Tau- tasie”—Mozart, piano, Eleanor Lazen- by of Charlotte; “Prelude and Fugue” —Bach, organ, Margaret Porter of Charlotte; “Sea Moods”—Mildred Lund Tyson, voice, Frances Riddle Tyson, Columbia, S. C.; “Hosanna”— Grainier, voice. Miss Smith of Char lotte; and “Allegro from Organ Suite”—Woodman, organ, Carolina Bevis. All friends, students and alumnae of the college are invited to attend. Party, founded by her uncle. The Surprise Party’s platform is the es sence of simplicity: A jack-in-the- box in every pot, and two exploding cigars in the garage. Virginians Fifty of the University of Vir ginia’s most stalwart bassos, bari tones, and tenors will travel to New York on March 1st when Virginia’s Glee Club sings over a CBS net work, 3:15 to 3:30. The Virginians’ program will cover almost four hundred years of music in fiteen minutes, from Palestrina to Sibelius. The University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson, who wanted it to include a school of music. Music was considered sissy stuff in pioneer America, however, and the plan was shelved. The Glee Club was founded fifty-six years ago. Probably its most illustrious alum nus is John Powell, noted contem porary composer whose “Set of Three” was performed recently by the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orches tra, also over Columbia. , Now Playing MAE WEST W.
