. May Day Issue THE BLUES Vol. ^No. 18 QUEENS COLLEGE, CHARLOTTE, N. C May 10, 1941 Queen's Maid Cornelia Puts Crown On Queen Marie The annual May Day celebration was held Friday afternoon on the front campus when Marie Pons of Valdese, N. C, was crowned Queen of the May by her maid of honor, Cornelia Truesdale, of Kershaw, S. C. The traditional air, “Pomp and Circumstance,” was used for the processional. Preceded by her court, the Queen advanced to the throne where the coronation took place. Children attending the queen were, Jenny Lou Garrou, train bearer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Garrou of Valdese; crown bearer, Jerry Godard, and Sally MacGregor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard MacGregor, flower girl. The celebration was based upon the Hansel and Gretel story. The girls in the May court wore pinafore styled dresses in lime green, pink, blue and yellow. The court was made up of the following girls: OlHe Meadows, June Escott, Lucille Blackburn, Betty Ross Dellinger, Mary Heilig McDow, Eleanor Laz- enby, Catherine Kittles, Elizabeth May Day Celebration Held Friday Hansel And Gretel Kill Wicked Witch Brammer, Patsy Niven, Frances Mosley, Jane Montgomery, Virginia Cothran, Martha Brandon, Elsie Mosely, Ann Wiley, Mary Catherine Martin, Mary Lorene Jones, Eunice Watson, Margaret Powell, Jane Grey, Alice Clark, Sue McNulty, and Doris Raley. The first dance was a peasant dance with Lib Lael as Hansel, Eloise Pickard as Gretel, and Id- rienne Levy as the witch. A large number of girls took part in the lollypop dance in costumes of green, pink, yellow, and lavender. In an other dance sequence Katherine • Langerhans portrayed the white swan; and Marie Sprinkle, Mable Beach, Rosemary Vincent, and Dor othy Swearengin were water hya cinths. The dance of the peppermint candy sticks was led by Sara Alex ander as the peppermint-candy man. All of the entertainers took part in the grand finale which was followed by the recessional of the entire court.
