Twelve Juniors
Taken Into Honor
Society
A dozen O. H. S. Juniors were inducted
March 13 into the National Honor Society,
a scholarship organization which in Janu
ary replaced the Beta Club here.

Mildred Brooks are Carolyn Brooks, Julia
Ruth Carrington, Judy Ann Critcher,

Lawson, Eleanor Lewis, Betty Lou Rawls,
Bobby Ray, Shirley Tippett, Charles Wil
son, and Ray Williford.
Membership is based on good conduct,
scholarship, leadership, and service. Miss
Eugenia Boyd serves as club sponsor.
Joe Wheeler, president, welcomed the
guests to the assembly program in the
school auditorium. Frances Capps and
Vernard King conducted the devotional.
Marsha Ray introduced the National
Honor Society to O. H. S., and Linda
Garner explained the emblem, mounted on
an easel.
Before taking the pledge, ideals of the
Society were explained in a candle-light
ing service in which retiring members John
Webb, May White, Christine Hicks, and
Betty Jane Yancey lit the candles of cha
racter, scholarship, leadership, and serx’ice,
respectively. Callie Frazier presented the
torch to the new members by lighting their
individual candles. The singing of the
“Alma Mater” brought the ceremony to
a close.

Places First At
District Fair
Nancy Lawson won first place in the
Senior Biological Division at the District
Science Fair at Duke, April 4, and Thomas
Adams and Arch Crawford, honorable
mention in the Senior Physical Division.
Sandra Morgan, Margarite Williams,
and Corinne Fox won third place in the
Junior Biological Division, and Sam Cur
rin, Picot Frazier, honorable mention in
the Junior Physical Division.
Nancy will take her project, “A Study
of Mortality in the Mud-Dauber Wasp,”
to the State Science Fair at Moorehead
Planetarium, Chapel Hill, April 17-18.
Other students from Oxford exhibiting
in the District Fair were Bobby Ray, Bob
by Dickerson, Anna Peed, Stewart Wild-
man, Peggy Woodlief, Richard Hall, Sally
Thomas, and Brenda Carol Jones.
Lea Lea Hall State
JCL Secretary
Lea Lea Hall was elected secretary of
the North Carolina Junior Classical Lea
gue at the state convention held March
7 in Chapel Hill.
Frances Larkins and Linda Currin were
her campaign managers. ITie Oxford
Chapter was also honored by the dedica
tion of the “Torch” to Mrs. Satterwhite,

forty from O.H.S. attended the state con
vention at Chapel Hill.
Other state officers elected were as fol
lows: Scott Summers, Morganton, presi
dent; Trey Snepp, Charlotte, vice-presi
dent; and Ann Thayer, Greensboro, trea
surer.
Several Oxford students are planning to
attend, along with Mrs. Satterwhite and
Lea Lea, the National JCL convention to
be held in Northfield, Minnesota August
9-13.
Dr. W. J. House
Addresses NHS
At Banquet
Dr. W. J. House, for three years princi
pal at Oxford High before going last sum
mer to be assistant superintendent in
Greensboro, addressed the local chapter
of the National Honor Society in their
annual bajiquet at the Woman’s Club
.April 4.
“Ev-erv- age has a way of being labeled,”
began Dr. House, “and with recent em
phasis on technological skills our age may
later be called the ‘Age of the Egg Head.’ ”
He suggested five traits for the develop
ment of your maximum ability and res
ponsibility: perception, purpose, patience,
perseverance, and perspiration.

Chief Marshal
Nancy Lawson was recently tapped as
chief marshal by'John Webb, retiring chief.
Others tapped by this year’s marshals
were Judy Ann Critcher, Annie Laura
Dixon, Julia Ruth Carrington, Eleanor
Lewis, Betty Lou Rawls, Shirley Tippett,
Bobby Ray, and Charles Wilson.
To Appear In Joint Recital
Bonnie Currin, a voice student of Mrs.
Thornton Yancey, and Norma Dean, a
piano student of Mrs. Bess Daniel, will
give a joint recital in the Oxford High
auditorium April 24.
Their program will consist of classical,
semi-classical, and religious music.
The public is cordially invited.
Debate Club
To Raleigh
Oxford’s Debating Club attended the
District debate tournament at Meredith
in Raleigh April 9.
John Webb and Joe Wheeler, negative,
won in the initial triangular debate over
Oxford Orphanage March 13. Marsha
Ray and Fielding Walker, affirmative, lost
in their debate with Roxboro here.
Besides the debaters, club members going
were Nancy Lawson, Tommy Robinson,
Bobby Ray, Julia Ruth Carrington, Mar
sha Ray, May White, Miss Bonnie Bunn,
debate coach, and Mrs. Lawson.
Roman Banquet
Ends Another
Latin Week
Latin Club Week will be clima.xed to
morrow night with the annual Cognosca-
mus banquet. Roman-style, in the Credle
cafeteria, with Bill Hicks, president, as
master of ceremonies.
Emperor and empress will be crowned
just before the festivities begin, which will
be featured by a three-course dinner, dra
matic skits from mythology, a Roman
dance, songs in Latin, and a slave auction.
Latin Week was ushered in April 10
with an assembly program presented by
both Latin classes. Posters on bulletin
boards and over the doorways this week
illustrated the theme of “Latin Lives To
day.”
Among the expected guests at the ban
quet will be “Pat’’ Walker of Henderson,
president of N. C. JCL last year. With
her will be the Henderson club’s president
and two sponsors.
Oxford’s Lea Lea Hall, elected state sec
retary of JCL in Chapel Hill March 7,
will be honored also at the banquet. She,
with Mrs. Satterwhite, plans to attend the
national JCL convention in Northfield
Minnesota, August 9-13. Several others
from the Oxford club are also hoping to go.
This year’s banquet is being held in
honor of Diana, goddess of the moon. The
floor show will be presented in front of
a miM-al backdrop painted by -Anna Peed.
Latin club officers besides Bill Hicks,
are Nancy Griffin, vice-president; Ann Sto
vall, secretary; and Linda Curnn, treasurer.
History Classes Go

Costume Supper
World Histoiy classes had an “interna
tional” supper April 10. in the Social Hall
of Oxford Baptist Church.
Foods representative of many lands were
served smorgasbord style. All students
were costumed as delegates from various
countries. Each delegation contributed to
the program, which had John Cheatham
(the renowned explorer) as moderator.
Travel posters drawn by several students
were used as decorations.
The event was planned by Miss Bunn
and her two classes. Miss Waldo helped
with the entertainrrfcnt, and students’
mothers prepared the food.
National Merit Winners
Win Prizes In Art
Sammy Daniel won first prize in the
annual .Art exhibit here recently and Joyce
Tunstall won second.
Mrs. Garland .Averett, of the Interme
diate Woman’s Club that furnished the
prize money, made the presentation at a
recent P. T. A. meeting.
The high school exhibit was on display
in the auditorium, and that of the Credle
school at the Woman’s Club.
