Seniors Honored
At Six Parties
Seniors were honored on several occa
sions during the last two weeks of school.
Grade-mothers entertained with a picnic
supper at Kerr Lake May 20 at the
Creech cottage.
The next evening, May 21, Charles
Belcher, Ray Williford, Judith Currin, and
Shirley Tippett complimented the Seniors
at a wiener roast at the city park.
On May 25 Eleanor Lewis, Annie Laura
Dixon, Phyllis Carmichael, and Pat Lcvc-
que entertained at a coke party on the
lawn of the Lewis home.
Mascot Waverly Barnes, Jr. and his
parents gave a chicken-barbecue supper
at Enon Community House May 27.
The Marshals complimented the gradu
ates at a reception following the sermon
Sunday evening.
After Class Night last night, a reception
was giv’^en by senior parents at the
Woman’s Club.

Jr. Sr. Prom In
Scotch Motif
“Brigadoon'” was the theme- of the
Junior-Senior held here May 6 in the
gym, decorated to resemble a scene on
the Scotch moors.
A musical program was presented by
a chorus of Juniors, with Clareance Le
mons, Kay Burwell, and Pat Carver as
soloists. Billy Elliott, class president, was
narrator, and Mrs. Henry Thorpe, co
sponsor, was accompanist.
Freshmen waitresses were Catherine
Duffy, Ann Gholson, June Hall, Daisy
Hall, Peggy Averett, Mary Campbell,
Claudia Currin, Judy Hart, Joyce Howard,
Bobbie Rawls, and Betty Whitehurst.
Costumed as Scotch lassies, they did a
highland fling as their part on the pro
gram.
Miss .‘\verett was co-sponsor with Mrs.
Thorpe.

Ann Stovall will edit the ’60-’61
‘‘Oxonian.”
Serving with her will be Diane Saun
ders, associate editor; Lynda Lilly, busi
ness manager; and Anna Peed, art editor,
for the second consecutive year.
Honor Society
Leaves Two Gifts
Julia Carrington, this year’s president
of the National Honor Society, presented
two flower baskets in assembly April 29.
The society also presented the Seniors
their Bibles last night.
Received Awards
At Class Night
Seniors who won the eight coveted
awards were announced by Principal Bruce
Sloan at Class Night last night.
Shirley Tippett won the D.A.R. award
for citizenship, and Charles Belcher won
a similar award given by the Rotar>’ Club.
Both of these were voted on by their
classmates.
Betty Lou Rawls won the silver goblet
given by the Oxford branch of the
.■\..\.U.W., and Ray Williford won the
companion Kiwanis award. These win
ners were voted on by the faculty.
Judy .^nn Critcher, valedictorian, won
the I. H. Davis memorial award, and
Shirley Tippett, salutatorian, won the
P.T..\. award.
Annie Laura Dixon and Jimmy Frazier
won the Danforth awards, copies of the
book, ‘‘I Dare You”.

Dr. R. H. Thornton
Finals Speaker
Dr. Richard H. Thornton, resident of
Oxford since 1958, will deliver the address
to the graduates this evening.
He received his A. B. degree from
Lynchburg College (Va.), his A. M. from
Columbia University, and his Ph. D. from
the University of Chicago.
His teaching experience includes five
years at the University of North Carolina,
and four at Woman’s College.
He began his affiliation with publishing
companies in 1924 with Henry Holt and
Co., serving as prc.sident 1932’39. From
1939-1956 he was with Ginn and Co., as
head of the College Department. His
editing includes “Recognition of Robert
Frost” (1937). Since they came to Ox
ford two 3ears ago Mr. Frost has visited
the Thorntons. Mrs. Thornton is the
former Nina Horner Cooper of Oxford.
Judy .\nn Critcher and Shirley Tippett
delivered the valedictory and salutatory
addresses last night at Class Night. Both
have been in National Honor Society this
Year.
Judy Ann plans to continue her edu
cation at a business school next year.
This year she has served as one of the
nine marshals. She was a member of the
Bible Club the past two years.
During high school Shirley has been a
member of Bible Club, Latin Club, on
Owl Staff, and in F. T. A. This year she
has been a marshal, secretary of Student
Council, recipient of the D. A. R. award,
a Senior Superlative, (Most Intellectual)
and was class poet. She was voted Stu
dent of the Month for May. She plans
to enter East Carolina next fall.
Ten Going
To National JCL
This year Oxford will be represented
by ten persons at the National Junior
Classical League Convention to be held
on the University of New Mexico Campus
at Albuquerque, N. M. Aug. 7-11.
Among the eight students going is Doris
Poole Watkins, N. C. JCL treasurer, who
attended the National convention in North-
field, Minn, last summer. The other
seven are Catherine Duffy, Linda Day,
June Hall, Charles Peed, Howard Harrell,
Marc Duggins, and Van Wood. Mrs. Mac
Satterwhite, local and state sponsor, will
also go, and Miss Sophronia Cooper of
Granville Library.
The Oxford delegation will be joined
by about 20 others from six other schools
for the train trip, starting at Greensboro.
A bus load from Lexington and Morgan-
ton will go earlier to sightsee as far as
California.
