Vernon Averett to
Head Sophomore
Class
Vernon Averett succeeds himself as class
president. Vernon, who is a member of the
Latin H Club, plays football, and is a
member of Monogram Club, is class pre
sident for the second consecutive year.
Assisting him as vice-president is Wil
liam Tarry, who plays in the band, is a
member of the Science Club, and was the
president of the Latin I Club last year.
L. G. Jones, who also got an encore
for the office of treasurer, plays in the
band, is a member of both Latin H and
Science Clubs, and participates in Boys’
Intramurals.
Susan Watkins is the first girl to hold
an office in the class of ’65, which has
been all boys up to now. She is class
secretary.
The Sophomore class is represented in
the Student Council by Betsy Suitt and
Vernon Averett from Mrs. Speed’s room,
Dottie Hughes and Annette Clark from
Mrs. Shearin’s room, and L. G. Jones
and Allie Ellington from Mr. Richardson’s
room.
Latin II Headed
by Jim Byars
At the first meeting of the Latin II
Club Jim Byars was elected president. To
assist him and plan programs is vice-presi
dent Lucy Webb Baird. Luther Carring
ton was elected secretary, and Judith
Yancey, treasurer.
Jim plays football and also plans to
play basketball and baseball. Lucy is a
member of the G.A.A. and science clubs.
Luther is also in the science club and on
the Oxonian staff. Judith participates in
G.A.A., Girls’ Monogram, Oxonian staff,
and is a varsity cheerleader for the second
year.
Charles Peed
To Head Seniors
Charles Peed was chosen to lead the
Senior class for the coming year.
Other class officers include Judy Hart,
vice-president; Melba Newton, secretary;
and Wiley Emmert, treasurer.
This year’s Senior Class will be the last
class to graduate from the halls of O. H.
S., as it is hoped the new building will
be available by next September. The new
school will be called the John F. Webb
High School, with Oxford High, Stovall,
Oak Hill, and Berea consolidated.

Oxonian" Staff
At Work Again
The “Oxonian” staff recently sponsored
the magazine sales which amounted to
$2,518.48.
Individual pictures were made October
5.
Tony Oakes
Frosh President
The Freshmen chose for their president
this year Tony Oakes, a varsity football
player. Tony is also a representative to
the Student Council from Coach Parham’s
homeroom.
Caroline Mitchell was chosen vice-pre
sident. She is a member of the F.T.A.,
the Science Club, and G.AA.
They chose for their secretary Brenda
Currin. Brenda is a representative to the
Student Council from Miss Patterson’s
homeroom, a member of the F.T.A., the
G.A.A., and a cheerleader.
Jay Perkinson, treasurer, is a varsity
football player and plans to go out for
J.V. basketball and baseball.
Since all four officers are studying Latin
I, they hope to be eligible for club mem
bership.
November 16
Is Stunt Night
The National Honor Society will spon
sor Stunt Night November 16 at 7:30 in
the high school auditorium. Admission
will be 25^^ for students and 50(f! for adults.
Each club and homeroom will be asked
to participate, but not required. The
maximum time for each stunt will be ap
proximately 5 minutes.
First prize will be $10.00; second, $7.50;
third, $5.00. Talent prizes will be an
nounced later.
J.C.L. Slides
in Assembly
Oxford High was taken on a quick
J.C.L. trip to the West Coast through
Lucy Baird’s colored slides shown at as
sembly October 5, with Betsy Suitt doing
the narration.
Sixteen O.H.S. Latineers spent 20 days
(July 23-August 15) touring before and
after their four days at the National Con
vention at Bozeman, Montana August 5-9.
Lucy’s slides give a rather complete
story of their tour that included Disney
land and the World’s Fair, as well as such
scenic attractions as Grand Canyon, Pe
trified Forest, and Yellowstone National
Park.
Red Cross
Organization
Formed
At their initial Red Cross meeting at
O.H.S. members elected Diane Green, pre
sident. Melba Newton is vice-president;
Ruby Clark, secretary; and Linda Sand-
ford, treasurer.
A committee to make plans for the high
school enrollment November 5-9 was cho
sen. They are Meriwether Lewis, Louise
Hockaday, Margaret Baucom, and Patricia
Adcock.
Mary Campbell
Homecoming
Queen At O.H.S.
Mary Campbell was crowned O. H. S.
Homecoming Queen, October 19 at half-
time by Amelia Wheeler Baker, last year’s
queen. Sharon Overton, cheerleaders’ mas
cot, presented Queen Mary with a bou
quet of red roses. Linda Champion was
her Maid of Honor.
The queen was escorted by Terry Gen
try; maid of honor by Vernon Morton;
and last year’s queen by David Currin,
co-captain.
Junior attendants in the Queen’s court
were Elizabeth Watkins, escorted by Wills
Hancock, and Mary Wells Ruff, escorted
by Lou Goldberg.
“ Attendants from the Sophomore class
were Margaret Jennings, escorted by Al
lie Ellington, and Marilyn Tunstall, es
corted by Vernon Averett.
The Queen’s attendants from the Fresh
man class were Alma Watkins, escorted by
Meyer Dworsky, and Brenda Currin, es
corted by Jimmy Walker.
The Student Council sponsored a dance
after the game. The highlight of the
dance was the presentation of the queen
and her court in evening dresses. At this
presentation Queen Mary was escorted b}'
Wills Hancock; maid of honor by Vernon
Morton. Other attendants and escorts
were Elizabeth Watkins with Sam Currin;
Mary Wells Ruff with Lou Goldberg;
Marilyn Tunstall with Vernon Averett;
Margaret Jennings with Jim Byars; Al
ma Watldns with Marty Yancey; and
Brenda Currin with Jimmy Walker.
Bryson Woodlief
Heads Juniors
Bryson Woodlief, who served as Student
Council treasurer last year, has been cho
sen to lead the Juniors as president this
year. Bryson was also vice-president of
the French Club last year.
Elizabeth Watkins is serving as vice-
president in two capacities this year; Stu
dent Council and the Junior Class. Eli
zabeth was treasurer of the Latin Club
and secretary of the Future Teachers of
America last year. ^
Sara Sneed holds the job of secretary.
Jimmy Walker, who as president led
his classmates last year, will be trusted
with their money this year. Jimmy ser
ved last year as vice-president of the La
tin Club.
Sandra Morgan was named class his
torian after serving as class secretary last
year.

Leads Science Club
Jimmy Walker, as president of the
Robert J. Oppenhiemer Science Club, is
assisted by Charles Peed as vice-president.
With a double-duty job, Tilden Martin
is secretary and treasurer. The only girl
with an office is Betty Adams, librarian.
“We expect about 100 members this
year”, volunteers Jimmy. Mr. Richardson
and Mrs. Shearin are co-sponsors.
