School Opening 1955 I awoke, not to birds singing. Neither to bells ringing. I awoke to the patter of numerous feet. All directed to Orange Street. There were the old and the new, Among the children who came into view. With a look that was somewhat proud, I rushed to join the crowd. For you cannot begin to know. The fun of being in the Great Big Orange Street Show. Anita Dunston Hello boys and girls! Once a- gain we bring you “Greetings”. The Early Bird is off to a good start and ready to bring the best in news from our school. We have almost an entirely new staff this year. We realize we must get on the ball and work very hard to come up to those who served you last year. But I be lieve with the wide awake staff members and the fine reporters who are working with me, the Early Bird will really go places this year. It is our desire to please you, so we ^vill try and do our very best. We plan to have four issues of the Early Bird this school term. You will find in our school paper, classroom news, school highlights, poetry, fashion, fun, community news, jokes and adver tisements. We want you to give us the fine support you have always given. Stick with us and we will bring you the best. Eva Owens Welcome New Student'S We the principal, teachers and former students Of the Orange Street School with great deal of pleasure and happiness, welcome those of you who are here for the first time. It is our belief that you are capable and willing to share with us in making our school the best, feel at home and easily make new friends with an attitude of helpfulness, friendliness and sharing we welcome you. We also welcome Miss Hicks, Mrs. Revelle, Miss Harris and Miss Fields. So we hope dhey will enjoy this school term. Lizzie Peace 6W News Mrs. S. R. Wilson, Teacher We are happy to be back in school after our summer vacation. Our teacher, Mrs. S. R. Wilson is enjoying us. We have 12 girls and 24 boys in our class. We have.been working on our plans for the year. In order to make progress, we must “Do, make and learn.” Mary Ruth Lockett, a member of our class, was the proud winner of a Westinghouse ‘Console TV a- warded by Fox’s Department Store in connection with the opening of the firms lower level. Gloria Bullock, Reporter Watchful Eyes Well, school has opened again and these old lovers continue on their “Merry Way”. You can’t imagine how happy A. D. was to see E. F. C. W. and J. H. But today my mind isn’t quite | so clear. So you will hear from me later in the year. Janet Baptiste Grade 4 A Visitors Come To Orange Street School Each year we look forward to having many visitors come to our school. Mrs. Ruth Lawrence Woodson, State Supervisor of Elementary Schools visited our school and many of our classrooms. Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Colson and Patricia visited our school in Octo ber. Mr. Warner Cannady comes to our school quite often. Mr. J. M. Cureton and Rev. T. E. Parker, Jr. spent some time with us. Mr. Yelton, a state representa tive of North Carolina’s Retire ment System, spoke to our teachers earlier this month. Dr. E. E. Toney, too, looked in on us recently. Many of the parents have visit ed our school this year also. To all of our visitors we say, “Welcome, and we hq^e that you will come to see us again soon.” Laverne Johnson, Teacher Grade 2WH Miss W. H. Hicks, Teacher Yes! Yes! We have a good time in our classroom, working, playing, and studying together. We have a total enrollment of thirty-seven children. We are looking forward to a very enjoy able school year’s work. We are very happy to have Mannie Harris, Hazel Harris, and Virginia Hanks join us. We practice cleanliness, loyalty, honesty, and kindness. Lois McAllister, Reporter Intermediate Assembly The assembly progran^s will soon be starting. We are hoping every boy and girl in the interme diate grades at the Orange Street School will have a chance to dis play his or her dramatic ability. The assembly programs will be the second and fourth Friday of each month. Here is the line up.
