We were happy to become members of this splendid organi zation, and we hope that you have observed that we are by the way in which we are performing our duties. The Captain and Lieutenants are constantly checking on the various patrol members, seeing that they are carrying on their work according to the instructions given in, the Standard Rules. It was really funny when Frank Scott, then a fifth grade pupil and now a Mary Potter seventh year student, predicted in one of his Early Bird features that televi sion would come to Orange Street School. Well it’s no longer funny. Now it’s a pleasure to know that the predictions have come true and we now have T-e-l-e-v-i- s-i-o-n-s at our school. One is a console 27” model, the other is a portable 24” model. Our hats are off to our principal, Mr. J. H. Lucas for this wonderful accom plishment. THE EARLY BIRD , ; Principal of Mary Potter School We are very happy to welcome Mr. Erdman R. Bryant to our town as principal of Mary Potter High School. Mr. Bryant is a native of Kins ton, North Carolina and a gra duate of Johnson C. Smith Uni versity, Charlotte, North Carolina. He holds a M. S. Degree from North Carolina College, Durham, North Carolina. He attended Catholic University, Washington, D. C. and also did extensive work at Columbia University, New York City where he received a professional Diploma. His service record with the United States Army covers a period of thirty months. Mr. Bryant’s wife is the former Miss Corinthia Davis of Kinston, North Carolina. We are happy to have both Mr. and Mrs. Bryant become a part of our community and hope for them much success. V/elcome New Faculty Members Orange Street School has four new faculty members this year. We are happy to welcome each of them to join our school family. We love these teachers already, becau'p they see|.n sq pleasant and friendly. It seems they have been with us all the time. We hope they will like our school and all the children. We want our Early Bird readers to know more about these teachers, so I will give a brief history of them. In the Second Grade we have Miss Whelma M. Hicks of Oxford, North Carolina a graduate of Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina. In the Fifth Grade Miss Cyn thia Harris of Oxford, North Caro lina, a graduate of St. Augustine College, Raleigh, North Carolina. In the Fourth Grade we have Miss Lucille Fields of Oxford, North Carolina, a graduate of Fayetteville State Teachers Col lege, Fayetteville, North Carolina. In the Music Department we have as our Music Supervisor, Mrs. Althea Revelle of Ahoskie, North Carolina, a graduate of St. Augustine College, Raleigh, North Carolina. We wish for each of these tea chers an enjoyable school term at Orange Street School. Eva Owens P. T. A. Chatter With our new president. Rev. J. W^ Gwyn, the new look is very noticeable around our buildings. There has already been purchased two beautiful televisions for the entire student body and teachers to enjoy. The P.T.A. has provid ed for the installation of the out side antenna. The P.T.A. plans to add to the beauty of our school grounds by filling in the low places with crushed rock. The officers of the student Lea dership Council were installed in office in an impressive Installation Ceremony marked with beauty and dignity. The glow of candles and the gold and white dress of the officers was beautiful. The Rev. J. W. Gwyn, President of the Orange Street School P. T. A. ser ved as installing officer. Mrs. B. B. Redding, advisor, acted as pre senting officer. Invocation was made by the Rev. T. E. Parker, Jr., Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Lena Glover Smith, Prin cipal of Angier B. Duke School, was the guest speaker. In her own forceful and personable man ner, Mrs. Smith interestingly help ed the pupils to understand how they might, day by day, live more purposeful and wholesome lives. Mr. J. H. Lucas, our principal, gave the response and introduced the visitors. Room representatives and fa culty advisors, Mrs. A. K. Allen and Miss L. 13. Fields were pre sented.
