Those elected were: Seniors, Vincent Spaulding and James Jarrell; Juniors, Frede- rika Smith and Mamie Dejourn- ette; Sophomores—Tommy John son and Nan Fisher. These pupils compose the Senate Branch of the Student Council. The presidents of all charter or ganizations make up the Repre sentative Branch. The first meet ing was held and officers were ,elected to serve for the remaining school year, 1958-1959. The duty of president is recog nized as of great importance for this person represents the Stu dent Association. Filling this po sition is Garland McAdoo, a re sponsible leader. He is president of the National Honor Society and Bus Drivers; member of the Safe ty Patrol Force and Marshalls; and reporter for the French Club. Following previous policy, the vice president is a junior. This year, Mamie Dejournette of Mr. Gant’s IIB class performs this duty. She is a member of the Thespians, Marshalls and Student Announcers. Mamie is president of her homeroom and local di rector of the N.H.A. Janet Ellis and Nan Fisher were chosen to be recording and corre sponding secretaries, respectively. Janet Ellis, from Miss Morrison’s 12A class, is Lieutenant of the Safety Patrol Force and recorder for the Patrol Force. She is also Feature Editor of the school paper and president of the N.H.A. Nan Fisher is vice-president of her class, Mrs. Smith’s lOE and a member of the Thespians. Parliamentarian is an office on: which the council is most depend ent. Constantly there is reference to the constitution and on the new slate. David Richmond will be challenged to serve effectively at this job. When the Senators and Repre sentatives meet, they discuss prob lems brought before them by the students and teachers; they also formulate guiding principles de signed for the welfare of Dudley High School. The classes that started as an experiment, are now a part of the school curricu lum. These classes are made up of approximately 10,000 students in the North Carolina school sys tem. They are taught by Mrs. Lois Edinger, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. and are held 30 minutes, over W.U.N.C. T. V., Channel 4. Mrs. Edinger gives a review of the lesson from the previous day, sums it up, and then gives the new lesson for that particular day. After the T. V. class, a period is given for ques tions or discussion of the lesson. The students have guide sheets, that are distributed, enabling the students to prepare for their les sons in advance. In order for a student to get anything out of the lessons, he has to give his undi vided attention to the television lecture. The advisors at Dudley are Mrs. E. Jenkins, Mrs. I. Jenkins and Mrs. Robinson—overall chairman. These teachers are given special classes during the summer at the University of North Carolina to help further their knowledge of the course. J. A. Tarpley, principal. Then the officers were duly installed by Dr. Tarpley who wished them suc cess as they assumed their new duties. Of special note was the presen tation of the speaker, Mr. Norman Hoyle, 1958 Dudley graduate and ex-president of the Student Coun cil. Mr. Hoyle spoke on the sub ject, “Dudley’s AlmalMater.’’ With warmth and sincerity, the speaker exhorted the assembly to remem ber and to live by the “Message’’ of the Alma Mater. Claudia is also a member of the Young Women’s Christian Association. Claudia reigned over the Home coming game and a social which were held. Claudia and her attendants wore Navy blue suits and shoes and gold acces sories. Her attendants were Rosa Tribble, Annie Alexander, Bar bara McDowell, and Ann Stables. Claudia has these things to say on becoming Miss Homecom ing: “To represent my Alma Ma ter in the honorable position of Miss Homecoming for 1958-59, is to realize one of my greatest as pirations. “May I express my deep grati tude to you by reigning over the classic festivities with grace and queenliness. In the same breath may I congratulate our football players who have performed this year and are performing with the agility and adroitnes of the mighty Panther. “Yes, I thank you for choosing me as your Miss Homecoming, but I also want you to remember that I shall always carry the Dud ley High School Banner high— wherever I may represent my school.
