Tigers Win Disfricf Basketball Championship Stopped In State Tourney By West Charlotte Under the inspired guidance of Coach “Bob” Kornegay the Lin coln High School Tigers climbed to victory in the District Basket ball Tournament which was play ed at the Hillside High School in Durham on February 22-23. In their first game the Tigers met and defeated their arch rivals, the Hillside Hornets, with a score of 53-44. The Tigers toppled Smithfield in their second game with the score 50-38. Nello Atwater made the first eleven points. In their third and final game the Tigers met the “Little Blues” of Raleigh. The tigers won with the score 54-45 although the “Lit tle Blues” had beat them twice during the regular season. The Tigers moved into the State Tournament which was held at the North Carolina College in Durham on March 2-3. They were Captains For 51-52 Teams Are Elected In a recent meeting of the Lin coln High School Monogram Club the new captains of the 1951-52 football and basketball teams were elected. Matthew Davis was elected captain. Johnny Goins, one of the most versatile ath letes of Lincoln High, was elect ed Co-captain. Thomas Bynum, a Junior and member of the 1950-51 basket ball varsity, was elected captain of the 1951-52 basketabll team and Johnny Goins was elected co-captain. Samuel Atwater stopped in their first game by the “Royal Bums” of West Char- lotte High School with the scores 50-45. Ward Burnette The Lincoln High Intramural Basketball tournament went over with a bang this year. The teams participating were classes 7 through 12. The senior and junior g.rls were awarded byes in the first round of play. The eighth giade girls defeated the 7th grade girls in the opener with the scores 14-5. The freshmen girls stopped the sophomore girls 19-4 to wdnd ip the first round. The senior {iris opened the semi-finals with j a 22-6 triumph over the eighth Shelton McCauley, Alfred Bar bee. John Atwater, Eddie Guth rie. Leonard Cole, Richard Baker, and Clyde Burnette. Only three members of the bas ketball team are leaving this year. They are Captain Nello Atwater, Samuel Atwater, and William Hargraves. Samuel Atwater grade girls.. The other semi-final match was between the junior girls and freshmen girls. The jun iors won 22-11. In the final game the senior class girls won over the junior class girls with the :scores 20-12. In the boys tournament the sen iors and juniors were awarded byes in the first round. In the first game the seventh grade boys nosed out the eighth graders 20- 14. In the second game the sopho- ■ mores beat the freshmen 37-16. In the semi final the juniors de feated the seventh graders 39-8 and the sophomores edged the seniors 36-31. In the final game the juniors won over the sopho mores 33-31. Thomas Bynum of the junior class and Georgia McCoy of the senior class were awarded the most valuable players trophies.
