NON-PROnX ORGANIZATION US POSTAGE PAID PENLAND, NC PERMIT #1 PENLAND SCHOOL • PENLAND, NORTH CAROLINA 28765-0037- THE LINE ON THE LINE About a month ago, we sent you our annual fund appeal letter, asking that you join us as a Friend of Penland. We told you in that letter that if you become a Friend, you will receive the Penland Line four times a year. But just so you 'll know what we're talking about, we decided to send you this end of the year issue. In this Penland Line we are thanking all those who have supported us in the past year. We are also making a year-end report to friends and donors. Finally, we're giving you a look ahead into the coming year. We hope you 'll enjoy this chatty look at what is going on at Penland and that you 'll be encouraged to become a Friend of Penland if you have not already done so. ■■ A TALE OF TWO CATALOGS Success can sometimes bring its own problems. Our mailing list now stands at 25,000. Perhaps you remember that about eighteen months ago we "cleaned" it by asking everyone to notify us if they wished to remain on the list. We wound up with 16,000 affirmative responses. But requests to be placed on the mailing list come in at the rate of about 300 a month, in addition to the occasional acquisition of a guild list or some other group with specific interest in a craft medium. We've given a lot of thought to the best way to stay in touch with all those who wish to be in touch with us and at the same time, be mindful of the trees we use to send out mailings and the budget which we regularly ask all of you to support. With that in mind, we are trying a new experiment this year and we'd love to have your comments about it and any suggestions that might improve it. About the middle of January you will be getting a little book which is a replica of our catalog and will contain a grid showing the session dates and all the instructors and classes. This small brochure will also contain an application and the necessary basic information. If you already know when you want to come to Penland, what you want to study and with whom, you can simply apply. However, if you want to read the full course descriptions and look at the pictures and get a little more detail to help you decide, then you can call or write and we'll send you the full catalog. Actually, if you know right now that you'll want the full catalog, you can send us a post card and we'll add you to the first bulk mailing of catalogs. We are operating on the theory that so soon after Christmas, you may just be weary of catalogs and can get all the information you need from the initial mailing. We hope you'll approve of our efforts both to use our funds as wisely as possible and to express our environmental concerns at the same time. But please be assured that if you want the full catalog, we will be delighted to send it to you! There is a bit more to this tale of two catalogs and it involves another tail—a mouse tail, to be exact. We put these books together using Macintosh computers and three font software programs: Microsoft Word, PageMaker, Aldus Freehand and Microphone. Alicia Keshishian, a Penland Resident, was the art director and Donna Jean Dreyer, the editor. Linda Preuss, a former fibers student at Penland and currently a Macintosh consultemt, did the production work on her Macintosh IICX. m
