PENLAND SCHOOL OF CRAFTS • PENLAND NC 28765 • JUNE '90
Once again it is time for Penland's Annual Benefit Auction. On August 11, we will
gather under the tent and, with checkbooks and credit cards in hand, bid on some
100 pieces donated by instructors and Residents, both current and former.
Each year, the Auction provides major support for studio equipment and improve
ments. The expenses for the event are covered by the patrons and the ticket receipts
so all of the proceeds from the sale of work is used for the studios.
The Auction events begin on Friday evening, August 10 at 7:00 with a cocktail buffet
for patrons and auction donors. The party will be a double preview: the work do
nated for the Auction and the new meeting room. During the evening a group of
about ten works will be sold through a silent auction. There will be music, dancing
and good food prepared by the Core Students. There'll be tables and chairs on the
new second floor decks so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of a summer evening
On Saturday, from 11:00 to 1:00, donated works will be on display in the meeting
room. Once again there will be a silent auction; the bidding for these items will close
at 1:00. There will be demonstrations in the clay, fibers, glass, iron and metals studios
during the same period.
The luncheon and live auction on Saturday will be in the same location as always,
but it will be under a different and much larger tent. In the past we have used two
tents which has not been ideal. Another change is that the artists will be seated at
tables identified with their names. The bidding will begin at 2:30 and we expect to
finish by 4:00.
The success of the Auction each year is the result of the combined efforts of the
artists who donate the work, the Board of Directors, Staff, Residents, Core Students
and neighbors and friends who volunteer their time. Many former Core Students and
Residents also come back to help.
Auction invitations are in the mail. If you do not receive an invitation and want to
attend, please call Sally Morgan Guerard at the School (765-2359.) Admission is
$50 per person; patron tickets are $125 per person, which admits you to all events.
Add the 4th of July to the Easter and Thanksgiving pot lucks as a time for neighbors to get
together at Penland. WeTe not sure if the PENLAND LINE will reach you in time for this
year. But, if does, call the office (765-2359) if you plan to come. The School will barbeque
burgers and Italian sausage and provide potato salad and condiments. Bring a salad or
dessert to serve ten people. If you miss it this time, remember for next year.
